Sam Hurd was not a big name in pro football, but he sure sounds like a big name in the Chicago drug world.

The details of his arrest Thursday reveal a man deep into drug trafficking. Playing in the NFL was Sam Hurd’s side job.

From a pop culture perspective, Hurd’s story plays out like a story arc on The Wire or a Ghostface Killah song.

Here are some details from the criminal complaint against Hurd, available publicly.

1. Hurd told an undercover agent Wednesday night that he was looking to buy ”5 to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area.”

2. Hurd negotiated to pay $25,000 per kilogram for the cocaine and $450 per pound of the weed. So Hurd had the cash flow to pay for $575,000-$700,000 worth of drugs per week. That’s well over $2 million per month. (We’ll let you imagine how much he was bringing in or planning to bring in.)

3. The money Hurd was willing to spend was on top of what he was already purchasing elsewhere. Hurd told the informant that he currently distributed ”four kilograms of cocaine per week in the Chicago area, but that the supplier could not supply him with enough quantity.”

Hurd was trying to take his operation to another level.

4. Hurd first came on the police’s radar in July. After receiving a tip, police found a man with a bag filled with $88,000 in a canvas bag. The man said the money and car belonged to Hurd. It was Hurd’s car, and the receiver still attempted to get the money back.

This should have raised a red flag, but Hurd was too foolish or in too deep to realize he needed to slow down.

5. Hurd was looking for Mexican cell phones, because he believed authorities didn’t have the ability to track them.

6. This wasn’t a small operation. Hurd only dealt with “high level” deals; a co-conspirator handled more day-to-day stuff. Hurd allegedly had business as far away as California and had a fleet of vehicles.

We suspect this story is only getting started, and it’s one that could get increasingly uncomfortable for the NFL. If Twitter is any indication, it’s already big news.

Sam Hurd is the fifth-highest trending topic in the country right now.

Obviously that 685K he was making this year, or the 3-year 3.97mil contract he signed with the Bears isn't enough to pay his bills.

Though if those weights are right, he'd be making more money selling drugs than playing professional football. Sheesh.

Cocaine tends to be inordinately popular among people who get drug tested a lot - like many pro athletes - because of its short half-life in one's system. Should definitely be interesting.

This could well be the understatement of the week! There are a lot of nervous football players somewhere out there tonight. I have to believe the NFL is acting quickly to try and get that "list" handed over privately.

If the players that were buying from Hurd weren't reselling it shouldn't they just have to go to some BS counseling?

It rubs me the wrong way that the league tests for recreational drugs in the first place.

Ha
Most of us here use one drug or another. I have gone years without ingesting anything illegal but my opinion always stays the same.

Hmmm...I just read that the NFL only tets for recreation drugs once, during May or June each year. That isn't so terrible but why even bother?

That reminded me of how Florida stole my idea and I love it (although, of course, the ACLU is suing to stop it because that organization is the scum of the earth and loves anything that's harmful or immoral):

36 States Mulling Drug Testing for Welfare Recipients

Multiple states and pending federal legislation may soon change the nature of America's government entitlement programs. Proposed laws in nearly 36 states and U.S. Senator David Vitter's Drug Free Families Act would mandate drug testing for welfare recipients and participants in other taxpayer funded social services programs. Florida passed a similar law last month, but testing is temporarily halted due to a lawsuit alleging Fourth Amendment violations of unreasonable search and seizure.

Drug Free Families Act

Senate Bill 83 seeks to amend Social Security Act Title IV to include a drug testing requirement for Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program participants. If the federal law is passed, pending legislation in a growing number of states will no longer be necessary. The law would require any state offering financial assistance to adult recipients for illegal drug use. Entitlement program assistance will be denied if an individual tests positive or is convicted of a drug-related crime. Aid cannot be restored until a drug treatment program is completed and the potential recipient tests negative for drugs during a 6-month period after treatment.

State Drug Testing Legislation

Florida Governor Rick Scott campaigned on the issue of drug testing for welfare and signed a bill initiating the program into law in late October. Testing began several weeks ago but ended when a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) temporarily ended the practice. Language contained in the executive order mirrors that in the proposed federal legislation. Florida's law also includes mandatory drug testing of all state employees. A final ruling has not been issued in the lawsuit, which cites Fourth Amendment concerns, but is expected by the end of the year. Additional states with pending or preliminary welfare drug testing measures include Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio, Missouri, Arizona and Indiana.

Michigan Welfare Drug Testing Precedent

Michigan attempted to implement a mandatory welfare drug testing program in 2000. The law was opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union all the way to the Supreme Court. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote the majority decision in the case. Ginsburg stated that drug testing was an act of unreasonable search and seizure and violated Fourth Amendment protections. She further stated the state can only impose drug tests in cases where public safety is at risk.

The precedent set in the nearly decade old Michigan case is being swung by the ACLU like a heavy club in the pending Florida case. Defense attorneys representing the single father who filed an invasion of privacy complaint point to Gingburg's comments as a reason to terminate drug testing of TANF recipients in Florida. A provision in the law allows the state to share positive test results with law enforcement and a drug abuse hotline.
