Major League Baseball officially instituted a lockout at 12:01 AM on Thursday morning when the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement expired at midnight on December 1.

Commissioner Rob Manfred made the official announcement. "This defensive lockout was necessary because the Players Association’s vision for Major League Baseball would threaten the ability of most teams to be competitive. It’s simply not a viable option. From the beginning, the MLBPA has been unwilling to move from their starting position, compromise, or collaborate on solutions," he added in a statement. Both sides met several times earlier this week, but were unable to reach a new deal, which has led to baseball's first work stoppage since 1994-95. All major-league transactions, including free agent signings, trades and international free agent signings have been frozen. Stay tuned.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said Thursday morning that there are no further meetings yet scheduled with the MLBPA.

The owners and players failed to reach a new collective bargaining agreement ahead of the expiration of the old CBA at midnight on Wednesday, thus Major League Baseball is in its first work stoppage in 27 years via an owner-instituted lockout and transactions freeze. "People need pressure sometimes to get to an agreement," said Manfred. "But candidly we didn’t feel that sense of pressure on the other side during the course of this week. The only tool available to you under the act is to apply economic leverage. ... It is our desire to get back to the table as quickly as we can." Let the weeks -- months? -- of posturing begin

Just like a pitch five feet off the plate, Joe West thinks this is a strike.

So you're saying I Don't have to keep going to MLB Trade Rumors every 15 minutes to see which 32 year old reliever the Phillies picked up off the waiver wire?

We need an old time Manfred getting waxed. Analysts have poisoned the game which has infected all aspects of the sport and is going to be the thing hanging up a peaceful negotiations.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that there are no negotiations currently scheduled between MLB and the MLBPA.

This could obviously change at any time, but this underscores the fact that the lockout which began on Dec. 2 isn't likely to be settled in the near future. So far, the two sides have had a pair of meetings on "non-core economic issues." Evan Drellich of The Athletic reported in mid-December that MLB and the Players' Association were unlikely to discuss to discuss those core issues until January, so it's no surprise that things have gone quiet. There's a lot of ground to make up before spring training games are scheduled to begin in late-February.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the "reaction among players was not positive" to MLB's latest CBA proposal.

The owners made this core economics proposal to the players' union as scheduled on Thursday, but it sounds like the details presented within did not serve to advance the negotiations to any substantial degree. If any degree at all. MLB proposed a higher minimum salary and more money for players with multiple years of service time, per Jon Heyman of Audacy Sports, but the overall offer was seen as "disappointing." Passan writes that the question now is "how soon the MLBPA counters" and adds that "spring training starting on time is in peril." As of this moment, pitchers and catchers are (very tentatively) scheduled to report to camps in Florida and Arizona around the middle of February. Opening Day is, also perhaps tentatively, set for March 31.

I believe that opening day will be delayed. Pain will need to be felt before any movement occurs.

That said, there was precisely zero chance that the MLBPA was going to “like” the owners initial offer. Initial offers are not intended to be liked by the other side.

And why didn’t the MLBPA offer a proposal?

More ongoing CBA stuff....

From the article:

Many in the industry believe an agreement needs to be reached by Feb. 1 in order for spring training camps to open on time. The union has prepared a "war chest" in case the lockout lingers. Players will receive $5,000 in the first week of February as well as the first week of March if a deal isn't struck.

The sides next plan to work on a dozen non-core economic issues, in order to end the lockout as soon as the major points are agreed upon.

This sounds bad and still sounds like they're miles apart.

770K minimum for rookie players? Does the NFL even do that?
