Signed a 4 year offer sheet with the Browns. Bengals unlikely to match.

What was all that crap about keeping all the cap space to retain their own free agents?

They obviously saw value in him that we were not willing to pay.

but heck, we have Sanzenbacher right?

actually, Sanu is very athletic as the slot receiver, but it was nice to have depth while it lasted.

Bengals have decided not to match due to structure that would have paid Hawkins nearly 10-11M in the first two years...

5.5 million a year huh?
I'm not sure he can produce enough catches to be worth that. his skills are with what he does after the catch, he was essentially a change of pace player. fun to watch though, and I wished he could take Tate's return duty.

Sucks to lose him...looks like a slot WR will be in order at some point in the draft.

This year is incredibly deep at wideout.

I'm thinking the same.

they seem to like Sanzenbacher, but if the right guy falls to them, they won't pass it up.

Sanu is a good WR to have as a #3 though.
Tate as a #4 isn't bad, although he's going to do something that pisses them off eventually.

Still have Cobi Hamilton on the Practice Squad too...different measurables however compared to Hawk.

Sanu will be your slot guy.

Also, I could see more Eiffert in the slot as well.

Stop.

Sanzenbacher is not an upgrade over Hawkins.

Agreed. I like Hawkins over Sanz, but I also don't think that Hawkins is worth nearly 10MM over the first 2 years of his contract as a part-time slot guy.

Where the Bengals screwed up is not in matching him, but not tendering him at the 2nd round exemption for an extra 750K. They clearly didn't think anyone would pay Hawkins what he got. THAT is where the Bengals screwed up. I have zero issue in not matching now. Making another mistake to try and fix the first mistake is how you end up over paying for a player not worth that much.

Sanu will be in the slot, and is a more natural position for him. They also still have Eiffert who could be used split out wide, or in the slot as well. We'll have to wait and see how Hue uses them in the passing game.

Compared to the MJ/Collins issue, this doesn't bother me, whether they have room to sign Hawkins or not isn't much of the issue for me here. With Collins, at least, they could have afforded to bump his pay to keep him...
