No love for Barasso?

Come on I am hoping for Roberto Romano. It's almost been twenty years since the last time he came back from Italy to help the Penguins for a couple of games.

Yeah, WTF has happened to Letang? You're right in saying he seems to be out of position half the time and does pinch when he shouldn't (reminds me of a few Sabres Defense men) Reading a lot of this thread most Pens fans seem to feel the same way. Is there another option as far as bringing someone in off the bench or even playing with five d men?

Also agree that Voukon should get the start MAF is not the answer to their problems.

Same here I agree, MAF actually hurt them more in that game. Fleury needed to stop that goal in the 1st period after he came in.

I would have never brought it up if you hadn't said:

Then you proceed to say (with the Bruins having a 4-1 lead) that Bettman will get the Pens some 5 on 3 PP's to get back into the game.

Trust me, the last thing a Bruins fan wants to do is bring up conspiracy theories claiming the opposing team will get favortism when your players dad is the Executive V.P of the league.

Never mind. Endless argument

I am loving that the Pens have a goalie controversy right now. Not to be mean spirited but the more distracted that team is the better my teams chances are to move on to the SCF

With about a minute and a half to go in the first period the other night I said to my wife the Bruins need to take the three goal lead into the locker room and not give the Penguins any thoughts the are coming back. Then bam a Penguins goal I said oh fuck. Of course then Marchand scores. As it worked out I think 4-1 was worse for Pittsburgh than 3-0.

People questioning the Pens choosing to trade up and take MAF with the first overall pick. He was the top rated goalie and the Pens had shit options for goal the year before...Jean-Sebatien Aubin, Sebastien Caron and Johan Hedberg.

They finished 28 out 30 in GA the year before. Only one other goalie was chosen in the first 81 picks of that draft. He was good enough for B2B cup finals appearances while winning one.

When you're in need of a goalie and have a chance to take who was thought to be a franchise goalie, you pull the trigger.

It was a stupid move at the time and it's still a stupid move. The Pens were drafting third. Fleury was the consensus top goaltender in that draft, but Florida in the 1st spot still had Luongo with three more years under contract and Carolina in the 2nd spot had just picked Cam Ward the year before. There was no real danger of anyone ahead of them picking Fleury.

They could have still had Fleury in the 3rd spot, kept their 2nd rounder, and kept a young guy that went on to have a solid, if unspectactular, career.

Anybody know who was selected with the Pens 2nd round pick that they gave up to select MAF first overall?

/Too lazy to research it myself.

They could have had Loui Eriksson, Patrice Bergeron, Shea Weber, David Backes, or Jimmy Howard.

Thanks mall - if I'm reading it right, it looks like Stefan Meyer was selected with that pick.

/Also, another bang-up job by the Flames scouting department, selecting Tim Ranholt (plugger) with pick #39 overall when Patrice Bergeron was still on the board (selected 45th by Boston)

It looks like the Pens got a third rounder from Florida in that trade and selected Car bomb 73rd overall as well.

Also considering those other guys like Weber and Backes.

Just realized too that Nashville got Suter and Weber in that same draft. Wow!

Wow. What a friggin loaded draft in 2003. Hard to believe that some of the names mentioned were drafted in the later rounds.

What is the ice quality in boston. I know the PGH ice has been horrible, and that certainly hurts the Penguins... I know both teams play on the same ice, but faster ice helps a fast team, slower ice, helps a more physical team.

Regarding that draft... the Pens needed a goalie, he was rated #1. I'm not a GM nor was I in the room, but I'll go out on a limb and say the Penguins weren't the only team interested in Fleury, so it's possible another team was also talking to Florida for the #1 overall. Fleury helped the Pens win a championship (and helped them lose series, but never was the only reason).

Just throwing this out there:

Big Ben and MAF both became fathers for the first time... and both played horribly since. Granted Ben had a nasty injury, but I think he only beat the Browns since becoming a dad....

Pens seem to have this mentality that they want to prove that they are a tough team instead of beating teams with their skill and speed. They got sucked into that style of play against the Flyers last year and they're repeating it against the Bruins. Going out of your way to lay hits on the opponent isn't the path to success for Pittsburgh.
