Mentioned it in the draft thread a few hours ago. It's very possible this does happen. Hate to lose him as he's really starting to live up to the promise of when we drafted him with a 1st round pick. We don't have the cap space to keep him. Sucks. But we knew this was going to happen to a couple of our starters.

If this does happen, interested to see what we get in return. I don't think were getting their 1st rounder. But they got the 10th pick in the 2nd round. If we get anything less than a 2nd, it's going to a highway robbery. Irvin is a legit starting LB in the NFL who hits like a truck and very much in his prime.

Something also to remember is we could always sign him to a contract extension as well. There are options, but paying him 7.5+ million in 2015 isn't one of them.

We'll know the next two days.

He also appears to have a 2-cent head at times. His stupidity can be directly linked to costing us one game last year and also made several other costly mental errors early in the season.

However he cleared up his play as the year went on and did (as Regent stated) live up to his potential. The mental errors went away and his switch from LEO DE to LB seemed to come full circle.

I can't see us trading him at this point unless we desperately need the cap space to keep Wilson and Wagner. He is a key piece of the D and we have seen that this team seems to do whatever it takes to keep key components of the D intact.

Exercising the option doesn't mean we are locked in and committed at that price. It's not like a guaranteed sum of money or anything. A trade seems unlikely, but if there's a team out there that values him as much as Seattle, it's probably Atlanta.

Quinn's obviously interested. The Seahawks would have to be interested if the offer was that 10th pick in the second. But still, Irvin is now a solid starting LB and great with the pass rush. I hope we can keep him. We invested a lot into his development and it's now coming together.

No way we would get the 1st round pick. If we could get a 2nd that would be a coup. More likely a 3rd or 4th.

Agreed. Now the question becomes "is Irvin for two more years worth more than a third/fourth round pick"?

With 11 picks already, I have to say yes.

The only way trading him makes sense is if we are packaging him to move up.

Actually the question is "Irvin for one more year worth a third/fourth" Cause there is no way in heck they can sign him to that 5th year option for 7.5 Mill. With the money tied to KJ and what Bobby is going to get that is entirely too much money locked into the LB position, which is the RB of the defense in teams minds.

Fair.

Point still stands, though. We are in the heart of our current SB window. A mid-round pick for a proven starter (when we already are overloaded with picks) just doesn't make senses.

I think there's another question: how much is it worth to the team to have a motivated Bruce Irvin playing out the last year of his contract in Seattle in hopes of getting huge dollars somewhere else next year? Maybe the no trade and no option approach means he walks after this year and we get no tangible compensation, but maybe his play in 2015 in this scenario is what we value more than another 4th round pick?

Well it sounds like it may have been a rumor and ATL was the one sniffing around? But seattle is usually pretty tight lipped around such things.

One point about your post though. I dont believe JS/PC view this as "a window" I think they have a plan and are building and working with the idea of sustained success. The NE model if you will. They dont want to just win next year, but the next decade.

Also don't forget about Pierre-Louis, he played well last year before he got hurt. And generally LB's are usually fairly easy to find average guys. If they view Irvin a JAG, they can find a replacement.

I don't see it. They won't get a 2nd for him. And pass rushing depth is tough to find.

And he's the kind of player that blows up in contract years.

Latest unfounded rumor on the big board is Atl offered a 2nd (#42) and Seattle wants more.

I'm kind of with you here. This team is, of course, SB ready so a motivated Irvin trying to get a huge contract might be better than anything ATL will give us in return. Use your plethora of draft picks and draft another LB or two to potentially start next year.

JS should report for an immediate drug test if true.

I think a lot of GMs have deals in place depending on who is available when a certain team is on the clock. if mariota gets passed the titans at #2 the jets and redskins phones will be blasting with phone calls. With ATL we might have a deal in place depending on who is available in the 2nd or 3rd round when ATL is on the clock

If this is true then Seahawks should do the deal, unless they actual intend to resign him. Kind hate to see him get traded, because I think he's going to have his best year, this year and it would be nice to see him do that in a Seahawk uniform. Still if he's not getting resigned, you got to take a second round pick offer IMO.

Got to disagree with that. Watch how many pass rush specialist DE/OLBs hybrids are taken in the first round today. That position is highly coveted in the pass happy NFL.
