This report is coming from Yahoo sports:

The Denver Broncos propose fourth-and-15 play in lieu of onside kick. The rule change, would give a team the chance to convert what would essentially be a fourth-and-15 situation from its 35-yard line after a fourth-quarter score to retain the ball. Each team would be given one such opportunity per game, and the rule change would not eliminate onside kicks or kickoffs. With that being said, is this a good idea for the NFL to adopt, or should the league stick with onside kicks, what say you SportsHoopla?

I'd say more like 4th and 20.

So what happens with a DPI?
throw deep hope for a DPI & you are in scoring range.
or Defensive holding penalty that gives auto 1st downs?
I dont like it.

The details keep slowing seeping out. The NFL is slow releasing the full details this year. I think long term the NFL will go with something like this instead of kickoffs anyway. Punting is safer than a kickoff. This issue would be punting from the 35 would result in a lot of out-of-bounds punts inside the 20. I still think it's better than perpetual touchbacks though. I haven't watched the AAF but 4th & 12 at the 28, (which I believe is their rule), makes sense. The rule would make things safer than an onside kick. I don't see a need to limit the attempts to 1.

...and the best thing for the NFL would be to pay the AAF to test these potential new rules for a year rather than mess with an existing quality product.

That's a good point, DPI couldn't be an auto 1st in that situation, that would be brutal ... I say make it a 4th and 20, because it should be hella difficult just like an onside kick... If there is a DPI, make it like a 10 yard penalty, 4th and 10 ... if there is a second DPI, I have no clue at that point...

No thanks. That said, it's ridiculous the rules have changed with an onside kick.

Either way, giving possession AUTOMATICALLY to a team after a score is fuckin' ridiculous. Let's actually reward defense/special teams?

But nope... gotta have scoring apparently, because a bunch of dickhead NFL fans 'need action.'

Don’t like it. Onside kick is part of the game.

Makes perfect sense, considering:

1. The NFL is inevitably going to eliminate the kickoff.

2. Current NFL on-side kick rules make it damn-near impossible to recover one.

The stupider these teams proposals become, the more I become a "purist" with regards to rule changes...

Hell, 4th and 30...

Regaining possession after a score should be something that really takes a helluva lot to pull off.

Whatever the percentage of onside kick recoveries is over the last decade is what the equivalent of the down/distance they go with. If 7% get recovered... then make it the down and distance which gets converted 7% of the time.

Also, I would assume this also eliminates kick-offs entirely... right?

Yes

Evolution is good. I would use the PAT rule change as an example. However, turning the game on its head is not.

I hate gimmick rules. This has absolutely nothing to do with the normal flow of the game. Instead of kicking, you run an offensive play? Too left field for me.

Great guess. Last year there were 52 onside kicks and 4 of them were recovered by the kicking team......so 7%!
