i always thought 4th and 15 would be much easier than an onside kick so i'm glad they're not doing it.

Its 9% vs 17% ( onside kick vs 4th and 15 historically ) but onside kick % is far lower since the rule change

Especially with the rules. Could you imagine a big gm being flipped when a db gets an illegal contact penalty on the 4th and 15

This is where I had a problem with it. 4th and 15 would be easier for some teams to convert compared to others, but on top of that any penalty by the defense (MOST of which result in auto 1st downs these days) would automatically result in a 1st. They just need to change the onside kick back to the rule it used to be (where players could get a running start). I can't remember when an NFL player was injured on an onside kick (at least that often).

I do agree the 4th and 15 rule is better than what we have now but can we trust the refs to let the play happen without having that cheap penalty called.

I don't like onside kicks at all. I can't think of one sport that says when you're getting your ass kicked we will make an exception for you.

And thank the lord there is no 4th and 15 rules. Fucking Eagles secondary the opposition has a good 60% chance of converting.

Basketball's intentional foul would like to have a word with you.

Probably one of the stupidest things in sports - intentionally fouling to get back into a game. Yes, you should make your FT's, but any other time in the game, if you intentionally foul someone it's usually a flagrant. When you get to that last few minutes of a game where a team is down 8-12 points - you just know those last 3 minutes will take 45 minutes to complete. It's brutal to watch.

There is no written rule in any sport that lets the team that's losing the game get the ball back. Just never made sense but I guess it can make the game a little more exciting. Intentionally fouling wasn't put in by the rules committee to give the team that's losing another chance.

Fair enough - I agree, not really a rules issue. The time-out, ball at half-court is also stupid, but I digress.

Either way - the new onside kick rules would have sucked, and I'm glad they are not happening ... yet, anyway.

This was/is a terrible idea.....and represents cutting across the grain of the concept of a fair and level playing field in a sport.
Imagine .....your team....considered to be a 14 point inferior opponent ....has played their heart out with extra effort for 58 minutes.....to post a lead that your opponent...even though just having scored...is still trailing.
Instead of forcing your opponent to earn the right to retain the ball by executing an onside kick that requires skill in topping the ball so it may pop up and be recovered by a physical display of courage to jump into the fray to get on it.....rather....we will only require and allow one shot at completing one pass.
This represents an unfair advantage to a superior opponent . Would a MAHOMES or LAMAR JACKSON or TOM BRADY rate such an advantage?
If this rule is ever adopted...the only game clinching lead late in a game will be a 9 point lead or greater.
