maybe it's because our defense is so terrible, but I like this trade (though a lot of avs fans are in panic mode), we've been begging for a #1 defensemen for ages, here he is, it lets liles not be the main man back, and gives him someone who can cover for his offensive game while our second pairing gains a ton of strength (or we can just have a huge first pairing)

what things should look like next year:

EJ-Liles
Quincey-O'Byrne
Wilson-hunwick(please god no)/cumiskey(I'd rather not)/holos/gaunce

holy fuck that looks so much better than the crap we have now, 3rd pairing is still mediocre, but our goalies aren't going to be saving great shots constantly

our offense is going to take a huge hit, but frankly... we have a ton of depth, Jones can be a (very) poor man's stewart, and if we sign hejduk and flash again next year we would have had to have at least one top 6 player on the 4th line (Galiardi-O'Reilly-Winnik-McClement, 3 of those 4 would make a damn good shutdown line, and we can still push one to the 4th), trading stewart weakens our top 6, but does solve that issue

maybe I'm overrating EJ... but I miss having a not completely terrible defense

Its a win/win for both teams. I hope Johnson stays put in Colorado for good, they need to lock this kid up long term. Avs have some great upcoming talent in the system.

Looks like the avs are also getting a 1 st round pick in 2011 or 2012 and the blues get a 2nd round pick as part of the trade not sure what the conditions deciding the year are

Condition on STL 1st rounder is it's top 10 protected. In other words, if STL 1st rounder is top 10 this year, COL gets 2012 pick instead.

if the blues get a top 10 pick this year, the avs get their 2012 pick instead

avs give the 2nd in the same year the blues give the 1st

We're going to have to wait a few years to see how this one shakes out. Johnson has Norris talent, he could easily be the best player in the deal. McClement is a great shut down center. Avs could win this one, but Stewart is a beast and Shattenkirk has loads of talent. Very interesting deal.

Although i like this trade all the way around, it still doesn't address the goalie situation. They need to do something to bring in a good vet or find some young talent to gel with this young team. Not sure where that is though.

I believe Stewart was a healthy scratch recently, so that triggers some alarm bells, but he's had some fantastic games against the Flames, so from that perspective (i.e. the Flames perspective), I really like this deal. I'm very impressed with Shattenkirk as well in the few games that I've seen him.

I'm not absolutely sure what to make out of this deal. It's really shocking to see the Blues pull the trigger like this on a player that they were supposedly building their team around. In one way it makes sense though. Maybe the organization felt that Johnson wasn't meeting their expectations of growth and development into the player they thought would anchor the team. Perhaps Shattenkirk shows more of the traits they were looking for, or maybe they plan on using the pick they received to get another first round defenseman. Either way really interesting deal here.

Woooooooah. Not often you see these things shake down at 2AM either. What a deal! At this point I'd say it's fairly even, Johnson is good, but still sort of gaining his faculties after that injury last year, Shattenkirk is obviously young and has a good future, and Stewart has been great. Honestly I don't know much about McClement. The draft picks make it a little more even.

This trade immediately screams at you because Johnson was selected first overall less than 5 years ago. In hindsight, the Blues needed a defenseman, and the only other ones from that draft class who have made it to the NHL are as follows:

Ty Wishart
Andrew MacDonald
Jamie McBain
Mathieu Carle
Jeff Petry
Matt Corrente
Mike Weber
Theo Peckham

All things pointed to Johnson as the best defenseman (as this list can attest to). Plus, the Blues lost Pronger and MacInnis after the lockout ended and they needed a big, cornerstone on the blueline.

I know he's not the GM, but I'm sure John Davidson wanted EJ to be the future of the franchise, but it appears he is missing something - I'd like to hear his take on how this went down.

I may be in the minority but I think the Avs got the better of this trade, I really love Erik Johnson and I think when its all said and done he will far and away be the best player in the deal.
