This trade immediately screams at you because Johnson was selected first overall less than 5 years ago. In hindsight, the Blues needed a defenseman, and the only other ones from that draft class who have made it to the NHL are as follows:
Ty Wishart
Andrew MacDonald
Jamie McBain
Mathieu Carle
Jeff Petry
Matt Corrente
Mike Weber
Theo Peckham
All things pointed to Johnson as the best defenseman (as this list can attest to). Plus, the Blues lost Pronger and MacInnis after the lockout ended and they needed a big, cornerstone on the blueline.
I know he's not the GM, but I'm sure John Davidson wanted EJ to be the future of the franchise, but it appears he is missing something - I'd like to hear his take on how this went down.
I just think it's weird that he's being moved after in his third NHL season. He had a good year last year, and one season of slight regression shouldn't be a death knell. The guy really does have some ridiculous skills. JD has made some pretty good moves so far, so he kind of gets the benefit of the doubt on this one... for now. Like I said it'll be years before we can really judge this trade, but I know I sure as hell wouldn't be moving EJ at this point in his career.
