What an absolute crock of BS. It's not JUST what you do leading up to the SB. If you fail to win the SB, it really takes some of the shine off of what you accomplished that season.

Case in point. The AFC East was a floor mat for the Patriots that year. And the Redskins, Bengals and Browns were hardly a challenge in 2007.

Yes, you can only play the teams on your schedule. Yes, every team that has a great year gets a few cupcake opponents along the way.

But the 2007 Patriots had 6 division games that all they had to do was show up and not crap the bed to win.

Now losing the Superbowl to the Giants does not take too much away from their regular season accomplishment of going undefeated, but none the less,
IT DOES TAKE SOMETHING AWAY.

And when you look at it in that context, if they were the greatest Patriots team of all time, then they should have finished.

But they didn't.

Pats had the 5th highest SOS in 07 they beat 7 teams that made the playoffs yes the east was bad but rest of schedule was no cake walk 89 niners beat 4 teams that made the playoffs but they won it all and its what really matters:suds:

A key fact that a lot of people keep forgetting; the 89 49ers destroyed everyone in the playoffs. The best of the best, and the Niners just crushed them like it was nothing. How many Super Bowl winners can say that?

I mean, the 98 Broncos won their 3 playoff games by a combined score of 95 to 32. That's pretty good. But that's not even close to the Niners 126-26 domination. That's just sick.

Compare SOS before the season, then after the season.

The stat is practically meaningless.

For Example, anyone who had the Texans on their schedule at the beginning of the year marked that game down as a tough match-up.

Not so much after the fact.

I gotta agree here..........Just cause the Pats lost in the SB,does not mean they were NOT the greatest team ever.

Its tough to win a few games in a row, less try to win what 18-19 in a row and the win the SB.......shit,if NE had lost during the regular season to the Giants,we`d all be calling it "An any given Sunday" win.

i`ve been watching the NFL since 1975,and i have to say the 07` Pats team was probably the greatest I have ever seen.Whether they lost or not.
and this includes my team the 85 bears, which I had always thought of as the greatest.
The Pats team that beat the Panthers was the best one, imo. The fact that their Super Bowl was close really overshadows how good that team was at times

Not tough for me. I agree too. I was a HUGE fan of the 49ers until 2002.

I wasn't a 49ers hater until I found football message boards in 2011.

Yeah funny how sports forums will change your opinion of a team. Once having endure trolls like Breaker, you learn to really root against their team., with a passion.

The 04 team that beat the Eagles was better in my opinion.

...By the way, the greatest team of all time wouldn't need a horrible call or 2 in order to beat the Chargers in the AFC Championship game.

couple side notes. a poster way back somewhere in here mentioned Walsh, Montana & company. I don't believe Walsh was coaching the 89' Niners. (but he was the better coach than Seifert) Going off memory so maybe a Niner fan can verify who the coach was.

Also the Dolphins indeed are the only undefeated team in the NFL, but as much as everyone likes to put the Win/Loss record as a barometer. The dolphins probably don't even make the top 20 best teams ever. They got lucky a lot that season to keep their win streak. No one dismisses the 07' (well I don't) as one of the great teams. They just would lose to the 89' Niners. None of the great teams would lose 100% of the time to the other great teams, but in say 10 games. the niners would beat them more than lose to them.
One other thing a whole season counts the playoffs with the regular season. regular season When the niners would run out clocks & the pats run up scores. the pats had 6500+ yds & the niners had 6200+ yards. then add the playoffs. Niners even with 89' rules vs. the rules that love offense in this millennium, had more yards. How even homer Pats fans can dismiss maybe the greatest postseason ever by a team in Superbowl era is beyond me. I do agree with the Pats fan that even though they didn't win the superbowl their 07' team I would consider in the top 10 of all teams. I just don't think they would beat the Niners of 89'

I'm the one that used them as comparison and '88 was actually his last year as head coach. I was comparing them as a group to the Pats trio.

What is the best single season team your franchise ever had?

I'm a Steelers fan and I'll go with the '78 Steelers, the one that got ring #3. Best SB ever, IMHO. The Cowboys team they beat were the defending champs.

I know I'll catch some flack from my fellow Steelers fans as some of them think the best Steelers team was the '76 Steelers. That being said, to be the best in my opinion you have to have won the SB.

Others will say it was the '08 club since 10 of the team we beat in the regular season were playoff teams either in '07 or '08, and had to beat the Ravens 3 times.

Can't really argue with either of them, but my personal choice is the '78 Steelers.

Well, oddly the best Steeler team didn't win the SB like you said in '76 and the best Penguins team didn't win the Stanley Cup in '92-'93.

I thought the 1st 2 SBs had dominant DEF and the '76 team was definitely the best DEF of the bunch in terms of points against...but you always felt uneasy unless we had the lead in the 4Q...the OFC was not always clicking, if Franco was not having a good day. But latter two 70s SB teams you always felt we had a chance to win because of Stallworth/Swann.

Chargers - 1963. Won the AFL title game by 41 points.

Super Bowl era would be 1979. Fouts had the worst game of his entire career against Houston in the playoffs, their most disappointing loss in franchise history. They had already blown out the Steelers and Rams in the regular season, the two teams who met in the Super Bowl that same year.

2006 is a close 2nd. Marlon McCree made a lot of people forget about Ryan Leaf that year.

Rams were my team when I was young. They went to the SB in 79 but that was one of their worst seasons in their 70's run if I remember correctly. Cardinals I kind of root for now, their SB season in 08 was fun, but they really weren't that good. I remember them getting blown out a few times, their D was bad. Somehow got it together to make SB and should have won it.

Probably that 1998 season the Falcons had. They did get to the Super Bowl for the only time.
