What is the best single season team your franchise ever had?

I'm a Steelers fan and I'll go with the '78 Steelers, the one that got ring #3. Best SB ever, IMHO. The Cowboys team they beat were the defending champs.

I know I'll catch some flack from my fellow Steelers fans as some of them think the best Steelers team was the '76 Steelers. That being said, to be the best in my opinion you have to have won the SB.

Others will say it was the '08 club since 10 of the team we beat in the regular season were playoff teams either in '07 or '08, and had to beat the Ravens 3 times.

Can't really argue with either of them, but my personal choice is the '78 Steelers.

You could argue that the '76 Stealers were a top 3 defense of all-time. Even though the era was more known for pound the ground, no team in the SB era had a Defensive stretch of games like the 1976 Stealers.

Yes, you rule them out. X :L

Of course not. If you crapped through the season, then, no you aren't in the discussion. :L

 Key phrase = OTHER than WIN the sb. :L

 Key phrase = even beat the SB CHAMPS in WEEK 17. Who cares about week 17? :L

:lame:
congrats for bringing no valid points to the discussion. just cuz you win the sb dont make you a great team or the best. the 08 steelers arent better than the 07 pats for example.

thats fair but i dont think any team has dominated like the 07 pats. scoring records, win streeks, salary cap era, undefeated, number of division leaders they beat and eventual sb champs, best coach ever, best qb ever, best wr ever, no sb team can claim they did better except win the last game.

Except they didn't win the last game and everything else you said is mere opinion. I'll take Walsh, Montana, Rice and the '89 49ers over any team the Patriots ever had. Period.

The 2007 Giants > the 2007 Pats.

I guess the 2007 Giants are better than the best team of all time.

You give me a team and I'll evaluate and bring points to the party, any team.

This is more to refute your :bullshit: than it is to evaluate. Give me a squad, I'll give you my low down.

I agree the '89 Niners were >> any Pat's squad. They would've carved up that '07 Pat squad.

I know it had to be tough for you. :suds:

I've never been an overly Hawk :cheer2:. I love our squad but when there's a
football discussion, I throw away the neon green shades and keep it real... :suds:
Btw, my favorite football and best era was the 1984 - 1995 NFC.
That is what I grew up with and it won't be duplicated.

Great point. I wish our run blocking this year was as consistently effective as it was in 2005. I don't think we've had a pro-bowl caliber guard since Hutch left in 2006.

Man if this years team had that offensive line with Lynch.... HOLY SHIT

why are the 89 niners better than the 07 pats other than winning the sb? its what you do leading up to the sb that determines wether you are the greatest team or not. not just the last game. a 9-7 wildcard team can win the last game. so tell me why the 89 niners are better than the 07 pats.

Well they weren't undefeated, so you can throw that out. Your opinion that Belichick, Brady, and Moss are the best coach/QB/WR ever. The salary cap made it more difficult to build a great team, but that doesn't necessarily make teams after the salary cap better. Win streaks and records are fun factoids, but are really irrelevant. The '07 Patriots beat 3 out of 8 while the '91 Redskins beat 3 out of 6 division winners. The '07 Patriots may have beaten the eventual SB champions, but they also lost to the eventual SB champions. The Washington Redskins WERE the eventual SB champions.

And I'm just using the '91 Redskins as an example as I think they are a team that gets lost in the discussion of greatest ever behind the '89 49ers, '85 Bears, etc.

Me too. I remember my dad saying the Niners were going to crush Miami in, '84 and I didn't believe him. I was still not fully aware of football at that point. It was odd because he hated the Niners and is a Cowboy fan. He turned out to be correct and Marino never got another shot.

The 1989 San Francisco 49ers season was the team's 44th season in the National Football League. The 49ers franchise cemented their reputation as the best team of the decade. After going 14-2 in the regular season, the 49ers completed the season with the most dominant playoff run in NFL history, outscoring opponents 126-26 and winning their fourth Super Bowl victory.

In 2007, ESPN.com's Page 2 ranked the 1989 49ers as the greatest team in Super Bowl history.

That's pretty strong evidence of why, but you can google that squad on your own and decide for yourself.

Except the 49ers weren't a 9-7 team. I don't see anyone here arguing that the 2011 Giants were better than the 2007 Patriots just because one team won the Super Bowl and one did not. The 49ers went 17-2 and won the Super Bowl, lost 2 games by a combined 5 points. The Patriots went 18-1 and lost the Super Bowl, lost their game by 3 points. Why would you take the '07 team? Clearly these teams were close, but one team won the Super Bowl, you have to give them the edge.

and no team was the 07 pats either. you know how hard it is to go undefeated in a salary cap era and break records doing it? why didnt the 89 niner go undefeated, break records AND win the sb? maybe cuz they werent good enough?

18-1 is not undefeated.

You sound like a '72 Dolphins kind of guy, and that's perfectly reasonable I guess.

Wow, that's tough. The '91 Skins.. I remember that year. They had Mark Rypien at the helm but just seemed unstoppable... they kept rolling along, into the playoffs, and eventually beat a damn good Bills team.
