Dave Grohl, no question. What dave did on a 5 piece kit in Nirvana was mindblowing. You watch the Paramount video, he is killing that little kit.

His playing Rock and Roll at Wembley with Jimmy Paige and John Paul Jones even impressed Jimmy.

It is funny how some pretty crappy drummers are mentioned as well... Which makes me wonder: Should this be called 'favorite' drummers? What makes a good drummer? Is this a Rock & Roll thread?

Anyhow... I've been a drummer since 1980. I have played in all kinds of bands, on all kinds of stages. I have played kits and aux. percussion. I was even in a percussion ensemble in college (basically twelve drummers doing crazy shit). I have seen and listened to a ton of music…. But I still cannot qualify myself to say who the best drummer is….

There are many different styles of playing and many different styles of music, including many different styles of Rock & Roll. Does Neil Peart sound like Carter Beauford? Can Terry Bozzio do everything Buddy Rich did? Could Mike Portney fill in for John Bonham?

Who knows?

I tell my students – you can be better than all of the above if you practice enough….

Buddy Rich was well known for having an explosive temper, especially when dealing with younger musicians he hired for his bands.
Not long after Buddy died, his widow answered the phone and a familiar voice asked to speak with him. She knew he was a musician who had worked with Buddy and was surprised he hadn't heard, but told him, "I'm sorry, Buddy passed away."
A few days later, the same guy calls and asks to speak with Buddy...she gets a little ticked, but just says, "Buddy passed away" and hangs up.
A third call with the same request, and she tees off on the guy for asking for Buddy when she's already told the guy twice that he's dead...the guy calmly replies, "I'm sorry, I just like hearing it."
