This is a great thread... a lot of great names mentioned here.

Neil Peart has been my favorite drummer since I first heard 2112 back in 1980. As great as his work on that album was though, it was his work on All the World's a Stage (especially that drum solo), A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres that really inspired me as a young drummer.

A couple of other names that I haven't seen mentioned but who certainly deserve a listen are Simon Phillips and Gavin Harrison.

Nice. Terry Bozzio's kits are works of art.

Second the mentions of Dave Lombardo (actually the first person to come to mind) and Gene Hoglan.

Some other favorites:

Damon Che (Don Caballero)
Dale Crover (Melvins)
Zach Hill (Hella)
Paal Nilssen-Love (Scorch Trio, various jazz ensembles)
Hamid Drake (various jazz ensembles, a lot with William Parker)
Sunny Murray (various jazz ensembles, notably with Alvin Ayler)
Elvin Jones (classic Coltrane quartet)
Rashied Ali (modern Coltrane group)

Probably not even remotely in the discussion of the greatest ever, but I really liked a guy named Garrett Shavlik from The Fluid. I knew nothing about the band before I first went to see them and a musician friend told me to listen carefully to the drumming...I did and thought it was amazing. I bought a couple of CDs and thought his playing added tremendously to the music without being showy or obtrusive.

All in all, based upon my limited knowledge I'd have to say Buddy Rich...he could do crazy stuff to get people laughing on Carson and also just plain play.

It just so happens that one of (if not the) best current drummers is in a trio with one of (if not the) best guitarists today.

Here's The Aristocrats w/ Guthrie Govan on geetar. Skip to 1:30 for the song to start. Fretless guitar is a fucking pain in the balls.

If you truly enjoy drumming, here is a 21 minute drum solo of Minnemann's.

Also, after seeing some people's opinions as to who the greatest drummer is, I'd love to see some people's opinion on the greatest guitarist.

I enjoy watching Jeff Beck: Performing This Week... Live at Ronnie Scott's. That is some first-class guitar playing right there. Jeff Beck certainly belongs in any "greatest" discussion.
