I will throw in a curve ball here... Gary Carter was BETTER than Johnny Bench!!!

He wasn't better defensively, calling pitches or offensively.

Yogi Berra had five seasons in which he hit more HR's than he struck out. I know it was a different game back then, but still, every time I think of that fact, it blows my mind.

I don't know how to measure defense, so I tend to use dWAR from baseball references... And Carter has a better dWAR but he also played 2 more seasons... and carter has 6 seasons of 2 or higher vs bench only having 3 seasons...

You did see this right?

So, who's the best catcher of all time not named Johnny Bench?

Oh my bad there. I didn't pay any attention to the fact you posted this thread. I just thought the title was...Best Catcher of all Time. I changed my vote.

I wasn't around to see Yogi play, so I chose the best player I can distinctly remember seeing: Pudge Rogriguez. Easily the best of his generation.

Yes and no... Mike Piazza could be seen to be the best of that generation since he is the best offensive catcher of all time... But Pudge played great defense and was a very good hitter too, so really depends on how much you weigh the factors...

Bud Black said he's the most deserving manager he's ever known in his time in the bigs.

I view Piazza as a great hitter, but not a great catcher. Pudge was possibly the best defensive catcher ever and had solid ability at the plate on top of that. Unfortunately, I think both of their offensive numbers were inflated thanks to steroids. If we were starting a team and got to choose between the 2 in their primes, I'd pick Pudge every day of the week.

I agree, but defensive metrics are so crappy that I don't see anything better than using dWAR for defense...

For a catcher, defense carries a lot of weight.
