So far our nominees in addition to the Lakers and Celtics are: Bulls, Spurs, Rockets, Sixers, Jazz, and Knicks.

@MHSL82 said he was just joking about the Jazz, but I think they're worthy enough to make the poll for the reasons I stated above, so I'll nominate them.

I think that @Stakesarehigh also nominated the Pistons and Warriors, but I was a little unclear if he was just giving a hypothetical. Please confirm if you nominated those two teams. I think they should be nominated anyway, but I'm obviously biased as to the Warriors. LOL.

I think the Heat should be nominated, but I'll wait for someone else to do that and present the case for the Heat, which shouldn't be too difficult.
I thought the Pistons were already on the list. More deserving than the Knicks. I nominate them and the Heat and the Warriors. I made the argument for all of them a ways back.

You're right. You mentioned them in your post about teams that are essential to telling the story of the NBA.

Yea...I may be slightly homeristic but Pistons Def over Jazz and Rockets.

The service that they did for all NBA fans by taking down the Lakers in two different eras will never be forgotten. LOL.

Credit to them also for holding down the Jordan Bulls for as long as they did.

I mean...the Jazz being nominated before Detroit or Golden State is pretty wild. The Jordan boners get a little ridiculous when a team gets more credit for losing to him twice than beating him 3 times in the playoffs.

No, the Pistons and the Warriors were nominated before the Jazz. You and logic nominated them before the Jazz were nominated.

How about the Bullets/Wizards? I would say no, but does anyone want to make a case for them? Dominant in the 1970s, Wes Unseld, and Elvin Hayes. Michael Jordan was there for a short time.

I think I would nominate them if they hadn't changed their name to the Wizards. Not only did it disconnect the team from its prior history (at least in my mind), it also resulted in a bad uniform.

If you nominate the Jazz you gotta nominate the Heat and Pistons too. Might be easier to list who you leave off.

Which are the LEAST storied teams in the league? I'll say Grizzlies and Nuggets. At least the Magic got to a couple finals.

I think 10 is a fair stopping point. But like I said it's hard to pick between 3 to 8 to me.

Yup. Heat and Pistons are in. So far the Bulls, Spurs, Rockets, Sixers, Jazz, Knicks, Heat, Pistons, and Warriors have been nominated as the other storied NBA teams besides the big two.

Can we stop at 11? (2 + 9)

I'd say that's enough

I think we're at the end of the list now. I don't see a good argument for anyone else besides maybe the Bullets/Wizards, but I would say no.

I'd have to check but those 11 teams have probably won 85%+ of the championships.

I think only 10 out of 75 titles were won by teams not listed, so 87%

If you go by NBA playoff wins there is a distinct 8 teams

LA
Boston

then

Philly
San Antonio
Detroit
NY
GS
Chicago

The top two are exceptionally clear the other 6 I'd put in the same boat. Some have more titles others have had better periods of longevity.
Use team names, not locations. The Minneapolis Lakers are responsible for NBA title and play off wins as well as la.

Should the poll ask for a top 5 of the 9 listed? I'm thinking 5 because it is about half of the 9 choices. Then the five winners would join the Lakers and Celtics as the top 7 teams in NBA history. Also, I think that Bulls, Spurs, and Pistons should easily be among the winners, so making the poll less than top 5 might make it kinda boring. The fight will be between which 2 of the other 6 will people vote for.

Hold on, how are the Pistons and their 3 titles more obviously in than the Warriors and their 6 including the very first one ever?

Not to mention all the iconic Warriors (Wilt with his 100 point game, Barry, Run TMC, Steph/Klay/Dray) vs what, Isaiah Thomas and Rodman?

There have been conference finals since 1971

The records

Lakers 19-4!
Celtics 9-11
Spurs 6-7
Bulls 6-5 (2 in the west)
Pistons 5-6
Warriors 6-2
Heat 6-2
Philly 5-3
Houston 4-4 (1 in east)
Knicks 4-4
Jazz 2-4

Of note the Pacers are 1-7 lol

By finals records

Lakers 17-15
Celtics 17-4
Spurs 5-1
Bulls 6-0
Pistons 3-4
Warriors 6-5
Heat 3-3
Sixers 3-6
Rockets 2-2
Knicks 2-6
Jazz 0-2

64 of the 72 titles have come from that group...really 10 since the Jazz have never won.

The Pistons have 3 lol. But yes I listed Warriors over Detroit in mine.

And people again seem to forget the 2000's Pistons made 6 straight conference finals.
