NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots and HC Bill Belichick have mutually parted ways.
Where do we begin? Belichick was hired by the Patriots in January 2000, just days after he was expected to take over as the head coach for the Jets. The Patriots gave a first-round draft pick to the Jets in exchange for the services of Belichick, who was still under contract with the team, but that deal quickly proved to be well worth the cost to acquire the now six-time Super Bowl Champion. A 5-11 start in his first season with the team was quickly forgotten when Belichick and future hall-of-fame quarterback Tom Brady ripped off three Super Bowl wins in a four-year span, which included a two-year run from 2003 to 2004 when they went a combined 28-4 in the regular season. Belichick and Brady would go on to win three more Super Bowls (2014, 2016, and 2018), but following Brady’s departure at the end of the 2019 season, things began to take a turn for the worse. A 2020 season with Cam Newton under center saw the Patriots go 2-5 through the first eight weeks of the season. They ultimately missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 but rebounded in 2021 to return to the postseason under rookie quarterback Mac Jones. Jones’ 2021 campaign would be the best of his three-year career, as the last seasons have been anything but stellar. An 8-9 season in 2022 despite one of the worst offenses in the league was enough to suggest the Pats could turn things around with a “real” offensive coordinator instead of defensive guru turned overnight OC Matt Patricia leading the charge. Unfortunately, the hiring of Bill O’Brien did little to correct things, as the Patriots went 4-13 this past season while the offense spun wildly out of control. Jones was ultimately benched for second-year quarterback Bailey Zappe for the season’s final six games as Belichick scratched at the bottom of the barrel in hopes of finding anything of value on one of the worst offenses in the. Belichick, the GM, can be blamed for the recent failures of Belichick, the coach, as he oversaw full autonomy over the rosters he carried into the season, but the last few seasons will be little more than footnote on what is arguably the greatest stretch of any head coaching run in NFL history. In 24 seasons with the Patriots, Belichick posted a 266-121 record in the regular season, winning six Super Bowls while appearing in nine — the most of any coach in league history. He led the only team to go 16-0 in the regular season when he acquired Randy Moss in a trade with the Raiders before ultimately falling to the Giants in Super Bowl XLII to have their perfect record shattered. A winner of 302 career games over his 29-year NFL career, Belichick’s win total is second only to Don Shula (328) and George Halas (318) on the all-time wins list. Prior to his dismissal, Belichick was already rumored to have several suitors should he become available. Set to turn 72 before the start of next season; it will be interesting to see how many teams line up interviews with arguably the greatest coach of all time.

I am not shocked at all by this news and in a way I am a little glad but mostly I am sad that this is the true end of an era. I just hope Bill doesn't get another gig like the Commanders and wins a Super Bowl his first year

Hard to believe that they parted way "amicably". Kraft could have 'traded' his contract for a peanut butter sandwich. But might have only gotten a 5th round pick. Bill could have just quit but would have had to sit out 2024. There are a millionscenarios.

My guess is that Bill has agreed to take a job elsewhere and in order to do it, ended his contract in order to take a new job. My guess is that BB will be announced at the new HC of the Atlanta Falcons as soon as this afternoon.

Now Kraft has to do the Rooney Rule BS. He also has to be extremely careful because the she-wolf in Tennessee will come out claws and fangs bared screaming that Kraft tampered with Mike Vrabel back in October when he was inducted into the Patriots HOF.

There a lot of crap that we have little idea about.

Amy Adams-Skank fired Vrabel.

She lost that argument already.

Yes, but she can say that she had to because he was already looking forward to leaving and screwed her pooch.

Any word about the rest of the Belichick staff? Or did they all get automatically canned too??

In your opinion, why is it BS? I'm not baiting you or anything... I can see several perceived possibilities why many might see it as bs.

Brady and Belichick were a great team, ten Super Bowls, 7-3! Great offensive and defensive supporting casts of course.

I bitched most of the season that BB should be gone … and now that he is, I’m sad

You gave us the best years of our Patriot lives … well … you and the greatest player in the history of all sports in the known universe … so … maybe you just shared the best years with us .. anyway … sad

You didn't see this coming? It sucks for sure and I am saddened by this news as he was basically the HC for half my life!

Because no team can just hire someone. Even if they want to hand the job to Mayo, they must go through the NFL hiring protocol. That's the BS because the Rooney Rule ensures that every team makes a mockery and brings in minorities that they have no intention of hiring to make it ""look"" legitimate. Then the minority guy turns around and says he feels cheapened. Not cheated, cheapened.

More than a few owners have brought in guys that weren't qualified to meet the numbers rule. Having a rule that doesn't benefit every candidate and make for equal and unbiased opportunity is BS.

I understand that you're not baiting me. The Rooney Rule is poorly written and makes the rule a number standard and not a qualification standard nor does it prevent an owner from hiring who he wants.
