Imo Mac was the 2nd best QB in the draft and still will stick with that. He was good with Josh, runner up to Offensive player of the year and alternative in the Pro Bowl ( I know that means squat). You bring in the 2 stooges Patricia and Judge who have no clue on offensive and then they pulled him a few times for a scrub name Zappe. BB gave Mac a butter knife to go into a gunfight with, worst weapons in the league.
I mean, he's an unbelievable backup and a serviceable starter. He's isn't a difference maker, but nobody in that draft is, so........in that aspect, I don't know what the fuck they wanted the patriots to do.

Easy improvement for this year? (2024)

"Film room guru Brett Kollmann recently pointed out that the Patriots’ lowly 64.0 field goal kicking percentage would have been tied for 181st among college FBS and FCS programs last season.

That’s bad—really, really bad."

The best college kickers have often failed miserably in the NFL. I had high hopes for Ryland. He certainly didn't live up to my expectations.

If he wants to be on this team in September, he best KICK everyone's asses.

Couldn't find another place to put this.

Just watched the Bucs and Jags game on NFL Replay.

I hate to say this, but Mac Jones was lights out. 16/23 275 2TDs .

If the Patriots had made any effort to have an OL, I swear he'd still be here. The guy was throwing lasers everywhere.
Yep, he also ran the ball a couple of times and even pulled off a successful QB sneak.

One of the Jags commentators said that he believed that Mac will be a very sought after QB next year and that if Lawrence gets dinged up, Mac will make a bundle as a 2025 FA.

He's found a trailer load of confidence and is really restarting what we all thought was a dead career.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Good for him. We will see how he progresses. He was in a bad situation in Pats org and made the worst of it. Personally, I’m glad he is gone.

This sums it up perfectly.

Sure, He was money in a preseason. What's going to happen if Johnny Lawrence does go down and the jags have to depend on him? He's a better backup than most of the league has, that's for sure. He should thrive if only for a few games. Charlie Batch was a backup for the Steelers for a LONG time. he won a shit load of games. Personally, I see that as the bar for Mac.
But people can grow and change. I hope for him that he can build on his time in New England. Maybe the best thing for him was to go in behind a known #1 QB and not have the pressure of holding off a Zappe. Different people thrive in different situations. Bill always brought in good young QB's to keep Tom on his toes, I just don't think that tactic worked with Mac.

Too bad that he couldn't have brought in Offensive linemen and wide receivers too.
With Scar he only needed scrubs. (Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Solder etc etc etc not withstanding of course).
And with Tom, he rarely needed a top flight receiver. Only a scrappy little guy or two.

Sad to say, but without either, he wasn't such a great head coach. He was great at surrounding himself with excellent coaches. Weiss, Crennell, McDaniels, Adams, Scarneccia, etc. etc.

He was...is...a great talent evaluator.

But the brain drain will catch up at some point. Death by 1000 paper cuts.
