Who would be some of the next best guys that I didn't list?

Jon Lester, Felix Hernandez, Cole Hamels, Paul Goldschmidt, Joey Votto, Edwin Encarnacion, Nelson Cruz, Ryan Braun, Adam Jones are some of the "next best guys" that I can think of.

Freddie Freeman
He’s been solid his entire career, but he’s just become elite within the last few years, and he’s closing in on 30. Braves HOFer, but he’ll need his prime to last longer than most to have a shot at Cooperstown

If he has a shot, 5-7 more years elite and get 20 year career. Lots of time to make it.

votto has a chance because of his career OBP.... none of the other guys you mentioned do...

I would have votto on the original list easily over Bumgarner

Are you saying none of those guys have a chance at all or just that none would have a chance if they retired now like the original post was asking?

Votto's probably the only one that gets elected. Hamels might have the best shot among the pitchers IMO, I don't think Lester/Felix are very close and I don't think they're adding to their resumes (especially not the latter). Goldy could have a pretty good case with a few more All-Star caliber seasons.

Goldschmidt has a chance. I think Edwin would have a chance if he played in the 60's-80's when everyone wasn't hitting home runs. He has some nice career totals. He's a modern day Tony Perez.

Encarnacion and Cruz bloomed a little too late. Great offensive seasons, but I dont think they stand out that we'll for 1b/DH/corner OF.

Yeah, and if you are into the WAR stat, Braun has a higher one than those guys. But in a league full of liars and cheaters his case stands out as more egregious than the rest. He basically Lance Armstrong'ed us

Cruz is out, if nothing else for the 50 game suspension he drew for his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

he just couldn't stay healthy after 2012. that's what seals his fate for me.

Isn't there a decent argument that Dick Allen did exactly that (only much better) at 3B and 1B and didn't even get a sniff?

Miggy, Pujols, Trout, Verlander, Scherzer. Kershaw would be 5b for me, I can't let go off the post season failures.

Scherzer hasn't been much better than Kershaw in the playoffs, and the Nationals have still never made it farther than the NLDS.

Yeah I agree with that. I think maybe what works against Allen is a little like Whitaker in that he has some seasons where he missed 15-40 games so there are not as many seasons where he racks up the big numbers. Also, overall his career wasn't as long as some (only 7315 plate appearances). But I still think he should be in. His career took place when it was a lot harder to put up power numbers than it is today. He was leading the league in OPS before OPS existed.
