Yeah I agree with that. I think maybe what works against Allen is a little like Whitaker in that he has some seasons where he missed 15-40 games so there are not as many seasons where he racks up the big numbers. Also, overall his career wasn't as long as some (only 7315 plate appearances). But I still think he should be in. His career took place when it was a lot harder to put up power numbers than it is today. He was leading the league in OPS before OPS existed.

He'd probably fare much better in MVP voting too if he had seasons like 1965, 1971, or 1967 in baseball's current era.

Oh I wasn't arguing for Allen (although I'd probably put him in), just using him to demonstrate why Edwin seems like an easy "no". And while Allen did miss some time Edwin only has about 600 more PAs more than him right now in the same number of seasons (15, so a little over 40 PAs a year).

Ah, ok. I was just thinking that if Edwin ended his career around the same time as a Tony Perez or Dick Allen with those same numbers the voters would see the 412 career homeruns and the good RBI total and vote him in. In the pre-steroid era I can't think of anyone that hit 400 homers and didn't get in except for Kingman. And he was truly a one trick pony. A Two Outcome player.

Few more years?? What else does he have to prove. I get that he needs 10 years. But you realize he only needs one PA in his 10th season??

He could lose his legs today. And still get that one PA. And still make the hof.

You're probably right about that but of course it's also very unlikely that Edwin would have the raw numbers he has now if he'd played during that era.

Dick Allen should have already been a hof. But he will definitely make it through the veterans committee

Edwin will never make it. Sure he has 414+ hrs. But if you look at season by season where he ranked in hrs he was only top 5 in the AL 4 times. And never better than third. And that is just AL RANKINGS.

point is, that in a HR era HRs need to be judged differently. So even though he is one of the best power hitters of the past decade and a half he has not done enough to make the hof.

With that said. 8 seasons in a row with 30+ hrs is a pretty amazing accomplishment

yeah, that is the point I was trying to make as well. I like to judge players with how they stack up against their peers in whatever era they played in.
Also, does Allen still have a chance to make it? I thought he missed his window of opportunity

Oh. I have no clue. Just assumed he could still since he may be the biggest snub(with no illegal reasons) of all time.

Kirby played 12 seasons, and if glaucoma hadn't cut his career short he was a near lock to get to 3,000 hits.
I know about Mr puckett. Its why i mentioned him.

Possibly (he was 36 and 700 hits short at the time, so depends on how severe his decline would've been), but the real question is whether his body of work at the time he retired was HOF worthy...his career looks very comparable to a guy like Bernie Williams, who isn't sniffing the HOF.

If Trout lost his legs he'd drop off a little but I still think he'd hit .280 with 20-25 HRs

he's a million times better than Puckett.
Yes he is. Im just saying trouts 1300 something hits and 700 some odd rbi, no matter how good he was, isnt HOF worthy on number merit alone. Like pucketts 2300 hits and not even 1100 rbi.

Yeah, it's the old debate about how many great years do you have to have before the longevity doesn't matter. The voters usually seem to like certain milestones but some guys like Koufax and Kiner did enough to get in with shorter careers. One thing about the hits and rbi totals. Trout is almost too good to ever lead the league in those categories because no one wants to pitch to him. But he will score a ton of runs in his career
