i know thier are quite a few smokers made, a lot of different brands now. I’m getting ready to buy one I’m on a tight budget somewhere in the $500 range. Let’s hear whatcha got and have you bought a pellet smoker and thought after a year or two ask yourself Damn I should of bought the other brand. Yes I would think smokers are always updating and getting better. So what would you recommend for me on my budget. Let’s talk pellet smokers.

You ever used an offset smoker? I can't help you on getting a good pellet smoker, but if you've used an offset in the past I'd love to hear how you think the pellet compares to the offset flavor wise.

My lazy craves a pellet smoker but my taste buds are like let's not get ahead of ourselves.

It comes down to what you want to do with it.

If it's the focal point of social activity, sitting around while it cooks and watch it, or if you want to fire and forget.

  1. The offset smokers are bad ass for a lot of BBQ, but you need to keep an eye on them and stoke them every so often, and needs a lot of adjustments, which is what is so bad ass about it.
  2. The electric pellet smokers I think have progressed to a point where they taste much like the traditional offsets types. I like the idea that you can turn it on, set it, and walk away until it's done.

One of those two is your answer.

Why would you want to smoke rabbit pellets? Weed is legal in lots of states now.

I built my own smoker last year following style of the Ugly Drum Smoker (UDS). It has served well, but is a bit more high maintenance than I thought it would be. I struggled with temperature regulation. But if I stayed on top of it the final product was delicious.
Last weekend I was smoking ribs and, again, the temperature was dealing me fits. I decided I needed a change. Before the ribs were even done I went on Amazon, did some due diligence, and ordered a decent propane smoker.
It was delivered yesterday. I will assemble it tomorrow and give it a trial run when my pork bellies come out of curing on Monday.

I have a Green Mountain. Works great. Oddly enough I was convinced to go Green Mountain by a Traeger owner.

They are better built, cook in 5 degree increments rather than 25, and go up to 500 rather than 450.

The only option I’ve really got is a Green Egg. You’re not building a drum smoker at a residential property in the city.

As a kid that grew up in the mesquite trees of West Texas and partook of the best brisket/ribs on the planet, I always viewed electric smokers as some sort of cheap appliance for lazy sumbitches.

Now that I'm one of those lazy (and old) sumbitches, I'm sold on electric. That, and they've improved electric smokers a lot over the years.

It comes down to what you want to do with it.

If it's the focal point of social activity, sitting around while it cooks and watch it, or if you want to fire and forget

One must become one with his smoker! It's ritual that goes back to the Native Americans smoking their fish or their fresh kills!

One must experience an offset with, the wood, large piece of meat, giant container of rub, and the most important item, case of beer.

Now I know what your gonna say, "McNabb my family would think I've lost my mine sitting out back all day drinking beer while making sure the temp is just right!" But believe me when they see you out there 6 to 8 hours preparing a meal for them, well the guilt just builds in them. No more going to church, no more having to follow the little wife around in stores, and forget about having to go to your mother in laws place to check up on her.

Why you say, because it's all about getting that temperature just right! Sure you could get one of those "set it and forget smokers" or you could step up the big boys table and get an offset smoker that gives you the greatest " get out of anything" card in the whole wide world!

Offsets are nice, I don’t want to try and figure out the temps with wood. And they’re to bulky.
I have a feeling offsets will be a thing of the past for manufactures. Kinda like cassette tapes, and CD’s. Not only are the smokers getting better the pellets are to.
