If we end up with Mariota, this team is actively trying to suck at QB.
If we were attempting to sign him as a backup and nothing more, with of course the idea that if something happens to Trubisky he goes in, then I'm fine. I see him as a significant improvement over Chase Daniel, without question.

Now OTOH, if you're saying whoever it is we try to sign as a backup will actually be brought in to compete for the starting role, then I agree 100%. Going from Trubisky to Mariota would at best be a lateral move.

I think we need to bring in a guy who will be a clear back up at first, but could be a starting option moving forward. You develop a quality starting QB by taking multiple shots on young guys. You get trash QBs by taking a realistic shot every 5-7 years and bringing in a washed up has been or never was player to back up.

Draft a young kid in college with upside is the best way to go. If they decide to sign a FA like Mariota that means they are fully onboard with Trubisky next year. Which i hope is not the case.

Yeah, need a QB that has a similar skill set to Trubisky that maybe has a bit (or a lot) more maturity.

IF we are making a further effort to develop Trubs, I think Fitz is the right guy... He can start some games if Mitch falters, and even though he is hardly perfect, can show him how it should be done! “Yeah,my throw sucked, but see how I sensed the rush and managed to go through my progressions?”..... or, “Yeah, I fumbled, but see how I stepped up in the pocket and found a running lane and took off?”....

And yeah,I do wonder IF Mariota might be a good fit with Nagy as well. Tennessee obviously wasn’t.

The fact that we are considering Mariota over Mitch is a motherfucking testament to how monumentally terrible Matt Nagy is.

I will say it a billion times over. Good coaches work with what they have and play to their strengths. Good GMs bring in better talent.

Nagy took Mitch and did everything in his power, to grind him into a pulp. Like he had a fucking vendetta against him. Straight fucking sabotage. Mayeb the worst culturing I've ever seen.

Nagy’s system requires a QB that can pass in the pocket. Part of Nagy’s failure this year was because he was trying to force Trubisky into being a pocket passer, which Trubisky isn’t. They don’t need another Trubisky. Mobility would be nice in a back up, but they need a pocket passer first.

Every system requires a QB that can pass in the pocket. Even Lamar Jackson has to pass from the pocket. In fact by some metrics...Jackson was the best pocket passer in football this season.

If passing from the pocket is a weakness for you....you aren't going to last long in this league.

Gotta have a pocket in order to throw from one.

Good luck with that, with no balance and a porous o-line.

There were many times this past season Trubisky had a pocket but never stepped up into it to throw.

The Bears O-line wasn’t good by any measure.....but Mitch also made them look a lot worse at times.

I actually think their pass-blocking was ok. Not great, but serviceable.

Their run blocking, on the other hand was atrocious, but I honestly think the scheme is shit. It's over-complicated nonsense. If it works, it can hit a big run, but it asks an awful lot of yer linemen.

I think winning football is smashmouth. You have to be able to run the ball effectively. Impose your will en sech, particularly late in the season when it counts the most. Nagy kinda came around to it late this year, but 2 years in, he has definitely shown an aversion to it. That is bothersome to me. Hopefully this season will provide a lesson to glean from.

The Bears already have a backup QB. His name is Trubisky.

After thinking more about this, I hope the bears go hard after Brees, Brady, and Rivers. If they can’t get one of those three, they should draft one. If they can get one of those three, draft oline depth and we might have a good offense next year. I’d even consider signing Trubisky to mild extension to sit on the bench and learn behind one of those three QBs.

I don't see Pace going after any of them.
But I honestly don't see Pace going after anyone. Because (1) it would mean that he admittedly messed up drafting Trubisky and (2) the future backup would only want to come here if there was a possibility of starting, which I don't see either based on #1.

My ideal scenario is that the filthy rich Jerry Jones throws a armored truck full of cash at Tom Brady so he can win a Super Bowl. Then the Bears go after a sad and available Dak Prescott. Just dreamin'.

Meh. I don’t buy Pace committing to Trubisky next year. He said he committed, but that could be because there’s a chance we don’t get someone better and that puts Trubisky in a weird place. It wouldn’t be a tough sell to tell Brady, Brees, or Rivers that they would start for the bears.

Not sure why they would come to Chicago......And they are not coming cheaply either if they did....
All that would do is put us further in debt for a very short term .....
Now I can see with our defense, we would have a legit shot at making it to the SB.......

But I highly doubt that happens,so Im more on board with o-linemsn first two picks and a te with our 3rd.....Or zny combination of the 3......

If they want to win a Super Bowl, Chicago is a great destination. I think Rivers is the most likely. If not, it’d be stupid to not use a draft pick on a back up QB, IMO. Especially if one of the top 5 is still available in the second round.

There's no reason for Pace and Nagy not to be fully verbally committed to Trubisky next year. Makes no sense to say otherwise. So take their words with a grain of salt.

I've been criticizing Trubisky for a while now but Nagy deserves a lot of the blame as well. Trubisky not having thrown a single pass in preseason was stupid. And I still remember that first game against the Packers. The Packers D's one major weakness was stopping the run and what does Nagy do? He has Trubisky throwing 45x and ran it 15x in game we lost 10-3. Oh and what does Nagy say after the game? "Listen guys i'm not stupid, i know we have to run the ball".

Good grief.

So does the hiring of Bill Lazor hint that they may target the Red Rifle as backup?

Rivers has reportedly moved out of his off-season house in Cali and has plans to pull his kids out of school there.

I think that him and Brady will both be available. I don't think the Bears and the city of Chicago is a tough sell. Reports say Brady would be willing to take a meeting with the Bears.

I would say that either being a Bear are unlikely, but not impossible.

Bringing in Lazor as OC opens up avenues to bring in Dalton or McCarron as well. I've always felt that McCarron deserved a shot at a starting gig. If we're only going out and getting a "backup quality" kind of a guy. He would be intriguing to me. Pace and company could sign him while still maintaining the façade that they have 100% faith in Mitch. Which might be something they have interest in.
