Anyone remember JohnO1992, this guy reminds me of him. Stereotypes were his specialty too and everyone from the south, especially Alabama were racists to that guy. He lasted about as long as it took to find out who he was.

Sorry, but to me thats a copout answer. My kids were raised as i was and one is a straight A student in college. One is a GM for a major restaraunt chain at 30 yrs of age and on the fast track to be a District manager in 2 years. One is in a JSOC command for the military with 12 years in and currently in parts unknown. They got this by not being slackers or just getting by. Drive and determination get you to the promised land, not just getting by.
I make no excuses for myself but somehow those same qualities that your children possess got into mine as well. One is a diplomat in The Foreign Service and the other a surgeon.

the ASVAB is a joke of an exam. I felt dumb just taking it. Almost made a perfect score
Agreed. It was shocking to see how many people did so poorly on it. But, as I said, a good score on that test is not a prerequisite for being a good soldier.

Brain surgeon? That could be very useful to you

Doesnt make it less true. Some of us Alabama grads have made something of ourselves because we had character.
And many, many more have been successful despite, or even because of, a lack of it.

My uncle scored a 99. Only person I've ever known who did(not that I know a bunch other than the dumb shits I was in the army with as I had a combat MOS).

But he's smart as balls. Graduated Valedictorian and all that shit. He went to college for about a year and a half and then for some reason just up and joined the Marines. Was kind of a surprise, but he loved it and became a lifer. Been retired for about 10 years now(fuck time goes by so fast)

He also stayed NCO which I never quite understood because he could have so easily have finished his degree.

I didn't know calculus and such, so I didn't do as well, but I still scored pretty high and it was one of the easiest tests I ever took - outside the GED test.

There certainly was no calculus when I took it. Just the word makes my head hurt. I was always stunned at the intelligence level of the Marines I went to schools with. They had this reputation for being dumb grunts but in my experience that was far from the case.

There was 1 calculus question as I recall(or at least I think it was calculus, I didn't recognize it as trig or lower).

I probably did not recognize it then. I didn't touch calculus until prep for The Point.

I took the ASVAB in 1978 as well. Your comprehensive "score" was actually the percentile ranking of your test results, not a true score. I scored in the 99th percentile which is the top one percent of test subjects for the nation.
I took the ASVAB again at my AFEES station on the way to Parris Island. My GT was 152.

Not bad for a dumb hick from Winterboro High School.

Sounds like my uncle, except his test was about 10 years later and he was some dumb hick from Battleground.

Some of the better soldiers I served with scored low on their ASVAB. I, for instance, scored a 133 but I was no more than a mediocre soldier.
133? That's pretty good considering that 99 is the highest possible score on an ASVAB.
