Former 49ers linebacker Chris Borland said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation" that he plans to return most of the signing bonus he received last season as a rookie.

Borland's surprising decision to retire from the NFL at age 24 over concussion concerns shocked the league last week. He was a third-round pick by the 49ers a year ago and signed a four-year contract with a $617,436 signing bonus. He earned a fourth of it last season, and ensuing reports suggested the team could come after him to get its money back.

Borland, who led the 49ers with 108 tackles and garnered consideration for the NFC's defensive rookie of the year, has maintained that his decision was not about they money. So, in returning it, he'll forfeit $463,077, which otherwise would have counted against the 49ers' salary cap.
