Patriots DL Armond Armstead announces his retirement

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Patriots first-year DL Armond Armstead announced his retirement today.

Armstead, 23, originally signed with the Patriots on Feb. 1, 2013, after one season with the Toronto Argonauts. The 6-foot-5, 305-pounder was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury List on Aug. 26, 2013.

Said head coach Bill Belichick: "It has been a pleasure being around Armond, as he gave everything he could to play for us. Armond worked extremely hard since joining us last February. He's had a lot of adversity personally that he's had to deal with – unusual compared to most other players – but he's always had a great attitude, worked hard and really did everything we asked him to do. While it is unfortunate he will not be able to play football, Armond is an outstanding young man who has a very bright future in whatever path he chooses."

Armstead played for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League after signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in 2012 out of the University of Southern California. He compiled 43 tackles, two special teams tackles and six sacks with Toronto. He was also named to the CFL All-Star game and helped Toronto win the Grey Cup. He started in 24 games at USC from 2008 through 2010.

Tough break, for the kid and the team.
Gave it his all but his body couldn't do it.
Forget what his salary was, hope he makes the best of it and his education.

Very unfortunate but the Pats seem to have depth at the position. I just hope Wilfork and Kelly are healthy enough to play when the season starts.

Herald reported that he had a heart problem and whatever it is, he can't play football anymore. Seems more and more in professional sports that young players havethese cardiac issues. Many of them get medication that helps, some have minor surgery. Much of it has to do with kids taking HGH and steroids in middle school to bulk up and guarantee getting a spot on a big time high school team.

It's sad to see a young guy work as hard as Armstead and never get a chance to play a down in the NFL.

Wonder if and how this may relate to his suit against his college...
