If your self control is poor enough that you deliberately take an action (in the heat of the moment or not) with a very high probability of serious, permanent brain damage or death if you are successful, you can't blame that on poor judgement. You should be seriously punished for it.

If you swung a baseball bat at someone you could be subject to legal action, IMO, and this is the same thing. Either one could easily kill someone if they connect. Once you use equipment as a weapon like that you aren't protected by it being "part of the sport" IMO.

I can definitely see your point. And had Antonio connected,then yeah I could see charges.
You could tell he realized at the last second he was about to really screw up and pulled it.

I really dont see any difference between that and trying to hurt a player intentionally while in the pile.

But realistically no one is going to get an assault charge for shenanigans under the pile unless they bring a knife or brass knuckles.

It's not a gun but give it to a 200 pound guy to fight a 300 pounder with similar percentages of muscle and similar fighting skill and the 200 pounder will have a damn good shot at winning.

It would take a hell of a lot to get an an assault charge for an on field incident. The most egregious soccer example I could find, for example, was Roy Keane later admitting that he tried to break Alfe Inge Haaland's leg in a match. IIRC the police investigated that but didn't prosecute him.

I should point out that it technically didn't end Haaland's career, he didn't play many more games after that, but that was due to a different, chronic, injury.
