Flame-killer for years to come. book it"Draft day, I'm not going to lie, it was a little nerve-wracking," Shinkaruk said. "My hometown team passed on me and it's going to be something that, when I play the Flames down the road, that I'll definitely have in mind."[/I]
Good summary by Mark Masters including Shinkaruk peeved that Calgary didn't draft him...
10. Hunter Shinkaruk is making a list
Shinkaruk doesn't have to look far for inspiration. The Medicine Hat Tigers forward was cut at last year's Canadian selection camp and is eager to erase that bitter memory.
"It will always be used as motivation, definitely at this camp, but also down the road when I play those players, who did make that team and if I play against the coaches, who cut me. It's something that will always motivate me," he said.
"It was tough. I felt like I had a good camp [last December]. I felt like I did everything I could have to make that team.
"At the end of the day it's something that made me stronger mentally and allowed me to mature as a kid."
The Vancouver Canucks prospect actually inked his first professional contract during the camp. And while he's thrilled that Vancouver scooped him up at the No. 24 pick he isn't about to forget that his hometown team, the Calgary Flames, passed on him at No. 22 by picking campmate Emile Poirier instead.
"Draft day, I'm not going to lie, it was a little nerve-wracking," Shinkaruk said. "My hometown team passed on me and it's going to be something that, when I play the Flames down the road, that I'll definitely have in mind."

great article. thanks for posting it
Shinkaruk has a really high ceiling in the NHL. His bust potential is pretty high too though, IMO.
Poirier WILL play in the NHL for a number of years. The kid has wheels that can't be taught.
I hope they both do well but I'm not sure that the Flames made a bad choice. They need young guys to start cracking their lineup and they got one at the end of the 1st round. Just my opinion but guys who can fly are at a premium in the NHL and I think the Flames did well with the pick of Poirier.
I hope Poirier's hands can keep up with his wheels - After watching Shinkaruk for a couple of years, he's got a sweet pair of mittens and he's plenty fast enough. I am biased because Poirier is somewhat of an unknown to me, but I guess the Flames braintrust knows what they are doing.
Don't get me wrong, I think Shinkaruk is a great prospect. I just think that Poirier will be a good player for the Flames. It's not like they went off the board and picked some kid from an unknown prep school instead of Shinky.
P.S. I think Jankowski might actually pan out.
