I was the only one at my house that was calm and expected us to get it done on the last drive. I was like we have enough time and one timeout.

With the way Alex had been playing I felt the same. I said "We got this, we have seen this before".

It was awesome. Alex again has surpassed my wildest expectations! That was a legendary drive!

Teammates further credited Smith’s performance and his demeanor in making the difference.

Prior to Davis’ 14-yard score, Smith was calming the nerves and encouraging his teammates in the offensive huddle.

“Alex and a couple of the guys were saying to relax and don’t make the moment bigger than what it is,” said former Saints center Jonathan Goodwin, who signed a three-year deal with the 49ers prior to the regular season. “We were able to do that and move down the field the field two times when we needed it.”

I know but I had this feeling he could get the ball down there with 1:37 left. I was thinking FG though. Once Graham broke free I was actually hoping he'd score so there'd be time left for the 49ers.

same here.... MNF all over but reverse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dilfer just broke the game winning pass down, pretty nice to see the anticipation on the pass, it was just perfectly timed and placed. I hope the growth and improvement continues.

I dug that shirt as well. I think Harbaugh gave them out.

so we'll need to sign grimes to replace rogers
landry to replace goldson
haralson will have to slide over to replace brooks
davis will have to move inside to replace snyder and the big girl

then we bring in colston to replace morgan!

I'm too lazy to check, mind telling me how a full overhaul worked out for the Eagles?

it's more like other teams will go after our free agents when we win the super bowl, so we'll have to replace them with cheaper parts

I imagine it's now suicide watch time on the ESPN 49ers forum.

LOL Cazic probably dropped down the instant Davis went to the ground in the endzone.

Now I want to know what Tebow has done to garner all this media time that Alex has not? Alex has been putting up 4th quarter comebacks all season and flying under the radar getting called a game manager. Tebow pulls a play out of his divine rear here and there and is some kind of hero.

I wonder if the media will now change their tune after todays 2 games.... Then again I like our underdog QB who just "manages the game"

I asked Smith if there was anything he'd like to say to his doubters and critics. After all this time, he deserves a chance to answer back, right?

"No, no, I don't, I don't, I don't," he said. "That's not why I play, that's not why I ever played. It's not. I don't have anything to say."

The story behind the 49ers' winning drive

Man, SportsHoopla makes me say something if I'm going to quote, it doesn't just let me quote an article, so: something.

Actually, I do have something to say after all. I think this makes sense. Before you ever put yourself under the spot-light, before the first tryouts for your middle school basketball team or high school football team, college, or pro, you have no critics to shut up. Why enter in to in effect create critics to shut up. There just has to be something else out there to play for. Winning is one. Money is one. Records is another. Love of the game is a classic. To stick it to people you've essentially created by choosing to play is a lower end motivator for Smith.

I MUST say this. Alex, as everyone has stated may not be elite and we may lose the next game, but anyone who recommended that he go sit on the bench behind Rivers, Brees, Rodgers, or whatnot must feel so stupid right now. Well, stupid is not the right word, to be fair, because there was *some* rationale involved. But to me, I look at it like this: he's already had the worst, what's a little bit more? If he succeeds he gets this or better. Face it, if he failed here he wouldn't be too old to be a backup later, he wouldn't have publicly exploded, and he wouldn't give up or become unintelligent. There was no risk to his odds of being a backup if it didn't work out here. Now, he could have ruined his chances of ever being a starting QB if he failed, but going to backup a known commodity is almost equally as career killing.

Being a quality backup is the worst backhanded career ending compliment there is. Seriously. If you were the President of your company, why would you demote yourself to be a branch manager working under the Boss's son (Rivers is not likely to leave) just to be in a different company? I didn't publicly proclaim any bet or prediction that the Niners would do so well with Smith, so this isn't for credit for me. It's just I never in a million years would think leaving the Niners for a known backup job would ever be worth it. You've got to have some pride. Now, if anyone could give me any proof that Smith would've started elsewhere or definitely knew he wouldn't start here, fine, baggage here may have dissuaded Smith in that situation. But to be Rivers backup? :smh: AND I'm not making this up - people seriously did recommend this. AND even if Smith had failed this year, I don't see anything that would make a voluntary demotion worth it. AND if he did leave, it would be to backup a bad QB with a good front office - but where does this exist? He'd beat out Grossman by mid year, but how's the FO?

Now, there was a chance that he wouldn't start here, and that's why I said if there was a chance elsewhere, it would be a consideration. But with the lockout, learning a new system and new players... SF gets the tie breaker. I know he wanted to leave before Harbaugh got here, but I assume he would have pushed his agent to get him a starting job or good chance at one. No backing up Rivers. Matt Leinart got lucky, only to get unlucky one half in.

Check out those last two passes to VD. Perfection, Alex could have placed them better with a handoff, 10 out of 10. And on the TD pass, it was critical as putting it right on the numbers protected from the safety who was right there. Clutch city.

Ahh, gotchya. I'm hoping that guys like Rogers and Goldson appreciate how nice it is to win and stay.

I say sign Rodgers. Try and sign Goldson, but if he plays hard ball, tag him. Want Brooks back but he will be pricey. Ohh and bring Alex back. 4 years $30 with 15-20 million guaranteed?
