After the Aints scored I thought no way Alex could bring the Niners back again... I was wrong. In Alex we trust.

I'm usually more on the pessimistic side but on both TD drives at the end I had a feeling Smith was going to get it done. There is something about him this year when the coaches decide to let him play.

Honestly I didn't think he had the second one in him.

I mean typically a QB has only one great clutch moment a game in them at the end and I thought that he used that one up.

Best post game comment by the TV guys: "Ya can't give Alex Smith a minute forty. Ya just can't." LOL. Whodythunkit?

I really think that Smith is limited by the plays that are called and his WRs more than his own limitations.

Look at the scoring that was required inside 4:11 to go in the 4th...Smith met Brees on EVERY occassion and then some...

This guy is picking up where he left off of in the 06 season...might as well erase EVERYTHING that happened from 2007 to 2010...imagine if he had a true #1 WR to throw to...imagine if Morgan had stayed healthy?

I know but I had this feeling he could get the ball down there with 1:37 left. I was thinking FG though. Once Graham broke free I was actually hoping he'd score so there'd be time left for the 49ers.

Most definitely. The line does not give him much time either. They don't play well against blitzing teams.

Partiality agree with you.

I do think he gets more blame than he deserves but I do believe he does deserve some blame because he does still miss at critical times, plays it a wee bit too safe, and holds on to the ball at times a bit too long.

But I said it a couple of weeks ago that he has to have the least dynamic group of receivers I've seen in a long time. I can't remember the last time I've seen a group miss on so many difficult but catchable balls in key situations. It's like unless Smith throws the perfect pass they can't catch the ball and sometimes even than they find a way to drop it.

I will say Davis was a big part of this but after today's game I've got to say that was manning up and taking charge and we need other guys to follow suit.

Southern, I absolutely agree with this. And it goes to the bigger points that I always mention, that success in the NFL is situational, and every QB is more or less the product of the system he's in. There are certainly guys that are more talented than others, but you don't turn into a Brady or Rodgers without combining a very good QB with a very good system - things like teammates, playbooks, teaching, coaches that can help identify opposition weaknesses, and on and on. And when you start combining these elements your talent can add up to more than the sum of its parts.

But to me, the difference in Smith's and the 49ers play this year from before should be a huge clue that there is overemphasis on GREAT QBs in the NFL, and that coaching is a more important factor in team success.

I have ragged him plenty but I have said this year that he had surpassed my greatest expectations for him. Well he did it again with an awesome playoff game. Great shit! I love Alex right now!

After the Saint's last TD, you posted "Tough way to lose but with piss poor play like that you deserve to lose." Seems like you thought the game was over at that point but maybe I'm misunderstanding.

On topic: Happy for Alex, he came through and finally had a defining moment we have been waiting for.

He earned his million dollar bonus today, with that clutch performance at the end...

YES!
Few have been harder on him than me but I can say that he pulled off something special today...Joe to Dwight, Steve to Terrell and Alex to Vernon...Woot!
Sorry for all the doubts,Alex.

I was the only one at my house that was calm and expected us to get it done on the last drive. I was like we have enough time and one timeout.

My thoughts were so up and down at the end I don't even recall typing that. But thanks for bringing that valuable piece of information to our attention.
