Whether it was consistent or not - at that level, you are well aware of where your bat is at in relation to the catcher - and it is deliberate how you hold it there. You can deliberately try to impede a catcher without actually moving the bat at all.
Smart and legal, because extremely unlikely to get called - exploiting the rules so to speak.
