Jessie Bates might have to be let go if the Bengals want 2 top tier OL. They can get 1. 2? It's getting dicey.

Late to this, so if it's already been said sorry - but this isn't true at all.

The Bengals, after some expected cuts, are going to have nearly 55M in cap. The Bengals typically spend cash/cap, which means they actually have about 100M to spend. They can afford to pay players up front now, and when the TV deal hits in several years, the cap is going to shoot up to about 300M - meaning the Bengals are in PRIME position to sign whoever the hell they want, pay them upfront money, reducing the cost in years 3-4+ meaning that when it's time to pay Burrow/Higgins/Chase, they have MORE than enough money.

A perfect storm of things hit just right for the Bengals. Question is - will they take advatange?

Regarding Bates, I’m just afraid of the over pursuit. He’s a fine player. But he’s just that.

I think he should get top 5 money. Not top 1/2, but top 5. If they can get him in that range, I'm good with it. If he wants top 3, I'll tag him for 1 more year and look for a replacement in this draft, or the next.

$14.75 is #4 money
$14.6 is #5 money

So if he signs and becomes the new #4 paid player at $15 million a year. Are we good? 5 years, $75 million / $35 million guaranteed

Jamal Adams $17.5
Harrison Smith $16
Justin Simmons $15.25
Jesse Bates $15
Budda Baker $14.75

I mean - how could you not see this coming if you are the Browns?

You tell your start QB he's not good enough and go after, full force, another QB. That QB decides that Cleveland isn't good enough and turns them down. Now Cleveland has to go back and tell Mayfield how good he is and how much they love him, even though they just tried to trade him, along with multiple draft picks, for another QB.

Even when they get something right, they get it wrong.

I honestly think this wouldn't had happened if the Bengals didn't make the SB. You see your in-state rival doing things that you're supposed to be doing and you see the reaction. Browns went for the jugular and missed. They did what they did seems like a trigger reaction.

But make no mistake, Mayfield isn't good enough. They were right and wrong at the same time. It makes perfect sense, but no sense whatsoever :pound:

Regardless of the Bengals - you had to know if you shopped your QB and offered as shit ton of picks for another QB - that if it fell through, your current QB was going to be unhappy and want out.

If they didn't feel that Mayfield was the guy, then they should have just gone all in on trading him at the onset rather than doing what they did. Instead, they tried to coax the hot girl to date them while still dating their current girlfriend in hopes that she shouldn't find out/get mad - and then are shocked when she wants to leave them once word got out what they were doing.

Also, I find it amusing that Watson's rumored reason for not wanting to be with the browns is that he didn't feel that the character of ownership/leadership was good enough in that organization. How's that for a slap in the face when a guy accused (not charged) of assaulting 22 women (allegedly) says that your organization has no character.

ouch.

There was a report by Chris Mortenson that said that the Browns claimed they "wanted an adult at the position." Obviously this is just a bit ironic given Watson's trouble, but that is besides the point. The real issue here is that you don't let these things slip to a reporter while the guy is still your starting QB. Mayfield acts like a douche at times, but he is 100% entitled to feel like the bridge is burned here. He's not the one trashing the franchise to the media.

But damn, the Browns man.... It was really less than 18 months ago that we were saying that the Browns had finally found a starting QB and had roster/draft capital to be an AFC contender for the next 5 years. Now they are looking at football purgatory - A roster to win enough games keeping you in the middle of the pack, but no QB to lead the franchise.
