it was a poorly asked question... But if your point to this whole thread is how misused closers are, then don't you need to show how many opportunities they COULD have been in??
this is why it is a crazy difficult subject to even start... If you say a pitcher should be pitching in high leverage times, how often are there high leverage times where the pitcher should be in??
then the problem is, whether the pitcher was available to pitch on that day of that high leverage time...
do you consider it high leverage when your team is losing in a close game??
point is that it is nearly impossible to analyze this... you really have to go game by game, inning by inning, and also see whether the pitcher has pitched often recently...
Before this thread, i was on your guys side and agreeing that closers pitching at the end of the game ALWAYS was a bad idea...
this thread, not necessarily thanks to your analysis since that was not really what you were proving, made me actually change my tune... Now i like that they pitch at the end of the game...
