wow, you were talking the Royals are 5th in batting average in all of MLB not just AL..wouldn't have guessed that at all. Detroit 2nd...lol, yeah, the tigers would still be hitting better than the Royals without Miggy, sure, another good one...I should have known not to even believe a thing Vice/Rayburn talks about..

You know I am not the huge new stat guy.( wRC wOBA and E=MC2)...

I will say the Royals batted .
.264 April
.246 in May
.281 so far in June hot streak involved

Tigers were
.273
.273 see below
.277 surprising enough with losing stretch.

Really means nothing to me because the overall stat I look at is W-L...
So steady as the Tigers sitting in top in team AVG. or up and down as Royals. Tigers have HR power and Royals don't. Royals have at least 3 starters maybe 4 with better ERA's than Tigs starters but Anibal. Tigers have almost doubled Royals in HR's yet only scored 17 more runs. Whatever it takes to win. Stills translates to only a 2 game lead. Not worried who has better what ever as long as a 1 game lead at the end.

there is where run support makes a diffence Gandy...wins..Porcello has been a great example of this for his career.

I'd argue Porcello's run support isn't all that much higher than the league average. Not gonna do the research, but I think you'll see in his wins, his ERA is probably mid-3's. His ERA gets bloated due to 4 or 5 REALLY bad starts each year, where he gives up 7 or 8 ER.

40 wins each, Dougie...

Which means the Tigers have four games-in-hand. I'd say that's advantage: Tigers.

Career splits:
0-2 runs scored: 4-27, 4.76 ERA in 35 starts
3-5 runs scored: 16-23, 5.20 ERA in 60 starts
6+ runs scored: 50-4, 3.69 ERA in 68 starts

I'd say he's gotten pretty good run support.

Well, I stand corrected. Though in 50 of his 70 wins, his ERA is close to the mid-3's.

As a casual fan, it seems Rick will go three games giving up 1 to 3 runs, maybe go 2-0 or 2-1, then that fourth start is a meltdown... 7 ER in 4 innings, or something like that, sending his ERA back to the mid-4's. He seems to succumb to "laziness" once in a while, where his pitches are consistently up in the strike zone. And he's a pitch-to-contact guy relying on a sinker. A sinker at or above the belt is a BP pitch. But this is where I think ERA is a misleading stat.

Fortunately, those games have become fewer and farther between for Porcello over the last couple of seasons.

Question about run support.
Do all runs that game count as run support towards said starter? Is just the runs scored when he is pitching?

Porcello last two starts he left Cleveland with 2-0 lead after 6IP and Tigers scored 3 more in 8th to make it 5-0 then Krol gives up 4 and Tigs score one more win 6-4. Does Porcello get credit for 6 runs of support? So many stats in the game of baseball, I'm sure there is probably a stat for in game and out somewhere...

Same with Twins start has a QS 7IP 3ER and gets no decision it is 3-3 when he leaves and Tigers get a walk off and win 4-3. Agin does he get 4 or the 3 runs for support?

Unsurprisingly, after originally having a 150 IP limit, there magically isn't a limit because the team is contending.

By extension, the magical 200 IP limit for Ventura is probably more superfluous than real as well.

Yeah, I can't see either being shut down if the team is still in the thick of it come September.

Bruce Chen activated. Collins and Joseph sent down. Woo, we aren't screwed if a starter doesn't go 6... or if a game goes to extra innings.

The Tigers collapse has gotten so bad they're actually on a five game winning streak. Poor bastards. (Thank you to Martin for than RBI double, since I bet on the over.)

Clayton Kershaw is really good...
FIP:1.59
xFIP:1.57
SIERA: 1.62
K/9: 11.70
BB/9: 1.12
Not BABIP fueled either at a .306 BABIP.

Kershaw's 10 most similar pitchers (through age 25):

Gary Nolan (949)
Tom Seaver (945) *
Jim Palmer (934) *
Vida Blue (933)
Jim Maloney (933)
Pedro Martinez (923)
Dave McNally (923)
Roger Clemens (920)
Lefty Leifield (919)
Hal Schumacher (915)

Keep in mind he already has a higher career WAR than Schumacher, Leifield, Nolan, McNally and Maloney.
