You can make few errors and be a bad defender (granted most metrics rate Cabrera below average defensively). BA is only part of OBP and SLG%. The league average SS is batting .251/.310/.372 (89 wRC+)... Cabrera's batting .251/.320/.412 (108 wRC+). So he's been well above average offensively at SS. He's not a star by any means, but he's a good player.
