Maybe more Wallace than Cruz? At least that's what I see. Cruz has rugby thighs and makes cuts like whoa.
I'm liking all the reports about his flexibility and versatility as a WR. I could see us grabbing a guy like Streeter still. Competition baby.

You guys are being surprisingly calm for taking a projected 4th rounder in the 1st. I like Jenkins a fair amount, but it's tough to justify a guy who almost certainly would have been there at your next pick.

I'll trust our talent evaluators over your opinion.

At the end of the day, that's how I feel too. HOwever, that doesn't preclude us from having an assessment on the pick. None of us met with Jenkins one-one nor did we pay him a visit to witness his workout. All we have is the limited games 8 total games we watched of him throughout his entire collegiate career. So although we don't have as much data as the professional scouts, we have some limited tools which can direct us to base an opinion of the kid.

Basing this on the little that I've read about him since the pick and his size more than anything...but any Victor Cruz comparisons?

Size, route running, hands, versatility?

Cruz was off the street so not the same bargain, but I'll happily take the production.

I haven't been able to find enough film on the kid to make any kind of assessment of his skill sets. Left to his limited reels and scouting reports, he seems like just another fast, undersized WR.

IMO, the pick is strange on two levels, first that we would take him over Hill and second that we would take a WR with our 1st selection. I think this is going to be a "wait-&-see" pick, because there certainly doesn't seem to be anything on the surface screaming "great pick!"

I'm not very optimistic about Randy...

You're right, but Hill also has a 39.5 inch vertical & I've heard he has pretty long arms even for a 6'4 guy (don't know the measurements though). That's usually pretty hard to cover in the end zone unless the guy's completely uncoordinated.

hill is a speed guy with bad hands

@SI_PeterKing:

Just talked to one team with a receiver need who liked first-round stunner AJ Jenkins over Michael Floyd.

For what it's worth, Bill Polian on the two surprise picks (Irvin to SEA, Jenkins to SF):

"I think the Jenkins pick, particularly, at where the 49ers were, makes a lot of sense. I thought maybe it would be a tight end, perhaps even Coby Fleener, who had played for Jim Harbaugh at Stanford. But this is nonetheless a good pick, because he's a good speed receiver. Which they need."

Sorry to post different people's thoughts on Jenkins, I just admittedly was surprised by the pick (wasn't everyone?) and wanted to provide some more knowledgeable perspective.

This is from Sando:

The St. Louis Rams enter the second round of the 2012 NFL draft with the 33rd, 39th and 45th overall choices.

They're in prime position to help themselves at wide receiver, in other words.

But they won't be upgrading with a certain receiver from the University of Illinois. That is because the San Francisco 49ers snapped up A.J. Jenkins with the 30th overall choice.

A.J. who? Well, turns out personnel people around the league, and specifically in St. Louis, knew plenty about Jenkins.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the Rams had Jenkins ranked nearly as high as Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon, who went to Jacksonville with the fifth overall choice. He says the Rams "almost certainly" have to take a receiver with the first pick of the second round. Thomas: "League sources told the Post-Dispatch on Thursday afternoon that the Rams liked Jenkins so much that his grade wasn't much different than the one given Blackmon by the team's personnel department." Noted: That Thomas' sources passed along that information in the afternoon is noteworthy. At that point, the Rams presumably would have wanted to explain why they felt OK failing to land Blackmon. They would not have known Jenkins would land in San Francisco. This lends credence to the idea St. Louis liked Jenkins quite a bit. The Rams hold the first pick of the second round, so they'll have first crack at the next receiver, should they choose to target that position.

I think Kyle Williams is the one they may end up getting cut at this point.

I don't know if anyone else heard Harbaugh's interview on KNBR last night, but he definitely made it a point to include Williams when he mentioned the WRs Jenkins will compete with. Said Jenkins is "joining a great group, with veterans like Kyle Williams". So it may be a bit of hot air, but if he wasn't in the plans I think Harbaugh wouldn't have bothered with that.

And as far as the Jenkins interview......he kind of sounds like VD. Super-exuberant, obviously very confident, not all that well spoken but hard to tell through the excitement.

Wait, the mock drafts missed something? How is that possible....something must be wrong here!

Wait and See... i guess.

Everyone says he's a speed reciever, on film, doesn't look so speedy IMO. Going off with what i saw last night via ESPN.

over Hill? seriously?

Oh yeah, MIGHT as well just kept Morgan.... wtf.

Like I said earlier.. at that point I was hoping to get Hill if we went WR, but he is a project. I just really like his upside and I think he can be really dynamic in a couple years. But we are ready to win now. Plus, maybe that's just the Al Davis in me talking. I don't know enough about Jenkins to really make a judgement though.

After having watched tape after having picked AJJ, there are a few things I noticed. He is below average at getting off the line cleanly but his game speed and hands are well above average. I like the pick but hope a) that Moss pans out while this kid hopefully gets in the weight room and works with the coaches on LOS technique and b) this kid has an unbelievable work ethic. Jerry, where you at? Got some time to tutor?

if the ball isn't caught, it really doesn't matter...

It does...if someone has bad hands/body catches it is more difficult to improve with coaching than someone with good hands/natural catching motion. You can be taught concentration much more easily, IMO.
