Dan Marino had great WR and a great Ol and never could bring the Dolphins to the Suoer Bowl winner circle. The speed of today's game would be his death. He was slower than Brady and his release was slow.

Keep the old timers in their proper place which was their own time period.

I've been watching the NFL since 1956 and I don't think Unitas or Tittle or Rote could be who they were 60 years ago today. The players have changed and the game has changed.

Sterling Sharpe IS NOT in the Hall of Fame.

And given that his name is on this list is more strong evidence that he SHOULD BE!

I've been bitching about that for a decade.

If Terrell Davis is a Hall of Famer, Sterling Sharpe damn sure is!

Agree that Sharpe is Hall worthy, but Davis had the greatest 2 year stretch of any running back ever Sharpe doesn't have anything on his resume thats even close to those 2 seasons

.

Do you watch football. Marino was great and had the quickest release ever. He would be Brees but better in todays QB friendly game.

Marino played nearly 30 years ago in a totally different era. There were no 300 lb DLs that could run a 40 in 4.5.
Marino couldn't run 40 yards in a week. He was incredible for his time, but he wouldn't fit in today's NFL anymore than Van Brocklin or Tittle or Starr.

It's comparing apples to dates.

No shit! Thus the thread.
Marino also didn't have the caliber players on the offensive side of the ball. He had great vision, a quick release and great accuracy. That is still vital in todays game. He was 6'4" 228lbs. That is still big for a QB today. He thrived in an era that was much tougher for QB's.

Uh... what 300 LB DLs are there right now that are running a 4.5?

Another QB that I think would dominate in today's game is Dan Fouts. I became a fan of his primarily because of my dislike for the Raiders, pre Bo of course.

Damon Harrison has pretty good wheels....not sure he could run down Brady and his 1.7 yards per carry......

I do agree that there is no way to know how guys from the past would fare in today's game. But saying Marino had great receivers and a slow release is just false.

Duper and Clayton were very good receivers. Marino had a slow release? Couldn't dominate in this era? Just nonsense.

Marino...in his prime playing with todays rules? You can start the numbers at 6000 & 60. Yards and TD's.

Marino was one of those players I loved to watch even if I didn't care for the team much. Kind of like Barry Sanders.

The game has changed, that is certain. For the QB it has gotten easier to put up good historical stats. Completion % and INT % have improved drastically because of dink and dunk passes due to the easier separation for the WR's.

Interesting stat with the yards per completions. Winston is the only active QB in the top 80 all time. Most are not even active this century.

You mean "the Dan Marino" who is universally known to have had one of the quickest releases in NFL history??? Or is there some other Dan Mariono that is slipping my mind???

Earl was one of the greatest no doubt and would be great in any era. But today's game is just perfectly made for Sanders with how spread out it is. It's all about speed and quickness in space and Barry was the best ever at that.
