  • 2nd & 4 at LAR 30

(0:21 - 4th) Tom Brady (NWE) pass incomplete across the middle.
  • 3rd & 4 at LAR 30

(0:07 - 4th) 48 yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri (NWE) is good.
  • End of the 4th quarter.
  • & Goal at NE 0

    (0:00 - 4th) End of the game.

In the 2001 regular season, there were only 10 kickoff returns for touchdowns. The statistical probability of the Rams running one back are of course very slim.

But New England should have had to kick the ball back to them after the FG.

I'm not pissed that 7 seconds came off the clock for a FG. The Patriots were the better team on the day, (regardless of other alleged accusations). I was over the result about 2 minutes later.

It was a pretty big topic back in the day.

That game is part of an era where they didn't really call defensive holding and that grounded the GSOT pretty convincingly. It was a bit of a shock to watch but looking back at things you see Brady, Bellichick, and some great Patriots defensive players and it makes the whole 'Patriots are massive underdogs' thing being a huge error.

But yeah, people wondered why there wasnt a kickoff.

When is the clock supposed to stop? I'm guessing that it is supposed to be when the ball crosses the plane of the goal post. If so, there were definitely at least 2 seconds left in the game.

Pretty sure the officials won’t signal it’s good, or a miss, until it’s hit something that isn’t in play. The ground, the net, the stands.

Same as an incomplete pass out of bounds. Clock rolls until the ball hits something. Even if you chuck it into the upper deck.

Yep and I know we're splitting hairs here but this is the last two plays of the 2003 super bowl:

  • 1st & 10 at CAR 23

(0:09 - 4th) 41 yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri (NWE) is good.
Carolina Panthers

KICKOFF
CAR29
NE32
  • 1st & Goal at CAR 1

(0:04 - 4th) Kickoff returned by Rod Smart (CAR) for 21 yards.

This time the kick travelled a shorter distance and the play clock only ran off 5 seconds.

The game clock operator will automatically stop the clock following a touchdown, field goal, touchback or safety after the appropriate scoring signal has been made.
so its when the ref puts his hands in the air not when the ball goes thru the goal posts :suds:

Per the video you linked, you can see both referees have their hands up with 2 seconds on the clock.

While alot of calls are subjective, this one was not. The rulebook you quoted clearly states this.

Not me. I still contend that the Redmond didn't get out of bounds earlier in that final drive and the clock should've kept running, likely preventing the FG attempt and putting the game in OT. Approx 1:45 of this video:
