To me it is splitting hairs. They are both awful right now. The run defense is the only decent part that probably helps the defense look a bit better. Before last weekend the run D was ranked 15th at least until Lynch shredded it last Thursday. It is like comparing a Vega to a Pinto

Is our defense the worst in the league? Yes or no?

Is our offense the worst in the league? Yes or no?

Is our offense worse than our defense? Yes or no?

This is simple common sense. It doesn't get much easier than that.

And nobody is disputing the fact that we have obvious issues on defense.

For now, I'm not worried about the league. I'm just worried about the Rams. One week at a time.

Let's keep it close Niners!

Our defense is not the worse in the league. There are some issues, but played well against Green Bay, Minnesota, and to an extent Seattle. The offense I believe is the worst in the league by far. Against Seattle, 11 possessions, 9 punts and converted 1/11 3rd downs. Offense does nothing to compliment the defense. The are issues with the OL and coaching staff, but it starts with the QB, and Kap is horrible (undertatement).

we are ranked 31st. our D is really bad. that giants game was bad. should of won that one. offense did a good job in that one.

Carlos Hyde must be a tough ass dude if he plays Sunday. I had my share of fractures from skateboard accidents and they hurt like hell. I can't see a proper healing process if he continues to play.

That is what the doctors said that were interviewed for one of the papers. Hard to heal if Hyde keeps playing on it

Offense did well against an inferior defense like the Giants and Ravens. At least the defense held the Packers to 17 points and the Vikings to 3 points. Offense is the worst in the league average less than 15 points per game. It's hard to win games when the offense has a hard time scoring, let alone getting a first down. When a defense allows 20 points to the Seahawks, it should be at least a competitive game. It turn out to be an embarrassment.

It makes me raise an eyebrow thinking the coaching staff will let a starting running back play with an injury, yet not have running plays for Kaep who is perfectly healthy.

Defense is not ranked 31st in points allowed, which is the point of defense in my opinion. Not saying they're good though.

The offense, however, is ranked dead last. To say that the defense is worse than the offense is to be out of grip with reality.

This. I don't understand why Purguy and Patterson can't seem to understand this.

To me they have both been really bad at times during the game and both rank poorly. I really don't care whether one is ranked lower than the other. The ranking doesn't interest me enough to continue dwelling on it.

Yet you cared enough to chime in when I corrected Purguy on his obvious math mistake? And you cared enough to respond to me to tell me that you don't care about it? I think you're side-stepping here.

Let's try this again. The 49ers defense is ranked 22nd in points per game. The 49ers offense is ranked 32nd in points per game. Which unit is worse?

It's a simple question. Why can't you answer it?

I think the team is so bad (noncompetitive in 4 losses) that some choose not to dwell on the ineptitude of this team. But I agree with you that the offense is worse than the defense. Sure the defense has had lapses especially in the secondary where we're young and at times I question Mangini's scheme. Still, when the offense have more punts than first downs, then the offense is not doing its part to keep us in the game. The defensive players haven't even had time to catch their breath and get a drink and they're back on the field because of another three and out by the offense. It has to be frustrating for the defensive players.

I wasn't going to respond this again until you felt the need to call me out on this thread to someone else. As I said before, I don't care which one is technically worse by rank. And to answer your question using points as stats, sure the offense looks much worse. But there are other stats also.

I don't completely buy this either. Yes, in some games the offense was bad like Seattle. The defense lost the NY game. There wasn't the issue you described yet I don't think NY punted the ball once. NY scored on almost every possession. The Ravens were the same way. This defense cannot generate a pass rush. They were better against Seattle because Seattle's offense just hasn't been very good and their oline is as bad as ours.

The defense did struggle against the Giants and the Ravens and certainly didn't stop the winning drive (Giants), but the offense has had a difficult time generating anything. I was listening to KNBR, they had a guest (Cosell) and he mentioned that although the defense has struggled, they have showed some improvements. The offense on the other hand has regressed where they have scored in single digits in three of the seven games. Even the awful Lions scored 17 points against the Cardinals and they just fire their OC. This offense just plain stinks!!
