I think there is a possibility of Baalke drafting a kicker or signing a UDFA, but SF's roster is so stacked that I don't think 2 kickers is realistic, as is evident by some backups being asked to contribute on Offense/Defense/STs.

Heck, we know SF will never come close to signing all their draft picks as it stands now, and probably not even the draft picks they wind up with after the draft, so an extra kicker on the roster during the season would be wasteful.

Oh, I definitely think there is a possibility of drafting or taking a UDFA kicker.

Last year's ranks among kickers who played in at least 3 games.

65.2 yards/kickoff (28 out of 39)
4.3 maximum hangtime (T-31 out of 39)
19.3 avg starting yard line (5th out of 39)
55.8% of kickoffs returned (22nd lowest percentage)

Always been a big fan of Phil. Never thought he was a booming kicker, but never questioned his accuracy, given the (probable) difficulty of kicking in Cleveland weather.

I really like this signing, though the days of 55+ yard field goals are gonna be put on hold for now.

i'm fine with a HIGH accuracy rate from 50 yards and below, maybe even 45 and below?

yes, longer field goals are certainly weapons, but just feel that the first step is make those that we "should" make?

The year before:

62.7 yards/kickoff (33 out of 38)
4.3 maximum hangtime (T-30 out of 36)
22.1 avg starting yard line (28 out of 37)
76.3% of kickoffs returned (highest in the NFL)

Phil Dawson worn #4 since college. It's Andy Lee's # on 49ers. Dawson's son suggests #8. Phil: "Son, in San Francisco, u don't wear # 8" #SY

lol.. that's awesome. I like the signing. I don't know how long it could last however. I wouldn't be opposed to a 3 year deal. Gives us a little more time to find/develop a long term option.

i would guess two years? three is fine as long as they don't add more guarantees.

btw - in the case of kickers, don't think there's 'develop'? not develop in the sense you develop 'position' players.

Meh, enough of the old kickers already... hope the 49ers bring in some new blood later on and the kid wins the job.

We the shitload of draft picks we have we better draft the best kicker available in this draft, and I hope he wins the job.

I'd like to have a young, cheap kicker locked up for 4 years on a very friendly cap deal.

for minicamps and training camp.

Dawson is 38 and I have no confidence that he'll remain healthy.

Why not? He missed 1 game his rookie year (can't find out why), missed the final 3 games in 2003 with a fractured arm, and missed 5 games in 2009 with a right calf (kicking leg) injury and a groin injury that I don't believe was as serious as the calf. In 2006 he had surgery in the offseason for a sports hernia which was deemed "minor" and didn't miss any game action. It's somewhat difficult to hold a broken arm against a kicker. Since 2004, the only games he's missed was in that 2009 with that calf injury. 11 of his 14 seasons he played every game.

I get that 38 years old is getting up there but he doesn't have a long injury history that I can find. I've read nothing that suggests he's injury prone or wearing down to the point where missing games is easily foreseeable with him given his history? Did I miss anything?

I good long term young guy would obviously be nice, but for good kickers 38 isn't as old as it is for other positions. There seems to be a lot of kickers who play into their 40's.

49ers gave K Phil Dawson a one-year, $2.25 million deal, including $1 million signing bonus. Great deal for Niners, not-so-great for Dawson.

oh ok. was thinking you meant in years? :-)

but now that we know his contract is for one year, "later on" means competition for Dawson next off season. or maybe Dawson doesn't even compete next year?
