^ Agreed. The 2012 and 2011 versions have been very good. Wonder what his cap impact is. He made neary 4 mil (3,810,000) last season.

We have so many picks this year I would've rather used them on a strong legged rookie.

I don't think this prevents us from drafting a kicker at all. Dawson is definitely not a long term solution.

Good signing. A vet who kicks in a very hard stadium to kick in, and is very successful at it.

But are we really going to keep two kickers on the roster? Seems like a waste of a roster space

Nobody said anything about keeping two kickers on the 53. Depending on how Dawson's contract is written we could draft & cut, waive and sign to a futures contract, etc. If we do draft we wouldn't be the first team to go into TC/Pre-Season with two signed kickers.

Good. Dawson's an experienced, quality kicker.

Always been a big fan of Phil. Never thought he was a booming kicker, but never questioned his accuracy, given the (probable) difficulty of kicking in Cleveland weather.

I really like this signing, though the days of 55+ yard field goals are gonna be put on hold for now.

was thinking they'd draft one too? anyway, not dissapointed in Dawson either....unless he got a 'big' contract?

since we expect to make another SB run (built for now), having an experienced kicker SHOULD help? especially during the play-offs?

sure hope his kick offs are decent?

I think there is a possibility of Baalke drafting a kicker or signing a UDFA, but SF's roster is so stacked that I don't think 2 kickers is realistic, as is evident by some backups being asked to contribute on Offense/Defense/STs.

Heck, we know SF will never come close to signing all their draft picks as it stands now, and probably not even the draft picks they wind up with after the draft, so an extra kicker on the roster during the season would be wasteful.

We still can. Draft and stash.

yeah, some teams have used kick off specialist in the past? but IMO, thats not a good idea, we'll lose a position player. that position player might be a ST's standout, situational player, or very least decent back-up?

we could keep him on the PS but similar idea, we'll lose a young position player, likely a draft pick? placing him on the PS also allows another team to claim him.

Hopefully with Kap, they will become a thing of the past - It would be interesting to know what the difference in average length per FG attempt with both Smith & Kap. Just a thought.
