49ers wideout Joshua Morgan eager to get back - Sacramento Sports - Kings, 49ers, Raiders, High School Sports | Sacramento Bee

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Joshua Morgan is running, and even sprinting, again on the surgically repaired right leg that limited him to only five games in 2011 for the NFC West champions.

"I'm back!" Morgan said Thursday, sporting his typical smile as he left team headquarters. "I'm running again and have been for about two weeks - yes, sprinting."

Morgan broke a bone in his lower leg Oct. 9 against Tampa Bay, had surgery to have screws inserted and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. It was tough watching as his team went 13-3 in coach Jim Harbaugh's first season to end an eight-year drought without a playoff berth or winning record.

While Morgan is set to become a free agent, Harbaugh has said the team plans to bring him back for next season. Morgan insists he'll be ready to re-sign the moment the team reaches out. The free agency period begins March 13.

"When they tell me, I'll be there," he said, walking well on his now-healthy leg.

The 26-year-old Morgan, a four-year veteran out of Virginia Tech, had 15 catches for 220 yards and one touchdown. Five of those catches came in that game with the Buccaneers before he was injured.

San Francisco, which lost in overtime of the NFC championship game last month to the eventual Super Bowl champion Giants, certainly could use Morgan back in top form. General manager Trent Baalke is expected to address the receiving corps in April's draft after the 49ers' receivers managed just one catch for 3 yards in the 20-17 loss to New York at Candlestick Park on Jan. 22.

Morgan made his way through orange cones and dirt Thursday as the 49ers' facility is under construction for initial work on a new $1 billion stadium nearby.

It is set to be a 1.85 million square-foot facility with a 68,500-seat stadium featuring 165 luxury suites and 9,000 club seats. The venue also will be constructed with the versatility to host a wide range of events, including domestic and international soccer, college football, motocross, concerts and civic events.

Last Thursday at the Super Bowl in Indianapolis, NFL owners approved a $200 million loan to help the 49ers build a stadium near their current training site. Team President Jed York's hope is to be in the new venue by 2014, 2015 at the latest.

And I'm eager to see him back on the field... in a Niners uniform.

We should be able to sign him to a reasonable contract. Even if he does come back we still need at least 2 other WR's.

Let's not pretend Josh Morgan is anything other than a mediocre wide receiver just because he got hurt. He is not the answer to the 49ers woeful receiver situation.

The answer no, but he is an upgrade who still has room to grow. He improved each season, and I thought he was showing signs of more growth this year and outplaying Crabtree the first 5 weeks,

Of course Morgan is not the answer to the Niners' WR problems. But he would have certainly helped the team. The Niners still need to address this position thru FA and the draft.

Morgan won't be confused with a Pro Bowler, but he is an upgrade over Swain, Matthews, Hastings, P.J. Fleck, and not just Ted Ginn Jr, but the whole Ginn family.

Morgan can potentially help the Niners a LOT next year.

the Coaches won't know how well he plays post injury? so Baalke can't commit too much in bringing him back, maybe an incentive laden deal?

Who do you want to sign Deep?

anyone who'll help this team, but lets spend wisely on players who for the most part - fit. can't help wonder if we're coveting guys only because of their name?

anyone includes our own players, for example Brooks fits our scheme.

So does Carlos Rogers. But because his contract MIGHT be problematic in 3 or 4 years, you would be willing to let him walk?

not quite sure what you're asking? are you suggesting we pay what we have topay, to re-sign Rogers?

its the same as every one of our free agents, you place a value for him and negotiate to it. if that player wants too much more then yes, let him walk.

we shouldn't 'chase' someone because of what he did last season. you value him more on what you project going forward. in the case of Rogers, his age will factor in larger into the value.

My point is simple. Don't worry about whether he's the worth his contract in 2016. Worry about if he's worth his contract in 2012 and 2013. Looking 4 or 5 years down the road is pointless for two main reasons.

1. We don't know how much, if at all he will decline over the next few seasons.

2. (This is a big one) We don't know what the salary cap will be in 2013, 14, 15 etc. We can't say he will have a bad contact in 4 years when we don't know what the cap will be.

Josh Morgan:

Blocking: Above Average
Routes: Average
Hands: Average
Jumping: Slightly Above Average
Speed:Slightly Below Average

To me, this doesn't add up to "MEDIOCRE". Maybe I am overstating his value, but given his starts this season prior to injury and coupled with his willingness to do the dirty work, I think he would be a huge asset to the team. Prior to injury, he was IMO the most consistent WR we had early in the season. Just my $0.02, for what its worth.

I'm tired of hearing that guys are "Ready to get back on the field". They better be fucking ready, why would anyone expect different?
