I'm not to good at cards, never really learned the intricacies of the count... I wasn't to bad at dice in high school so I tried my luck in some casinos... A whole different game... I went in one day in the afternoon to try see if I figure it out with less people around and there was a guy already there... He had a lot of chips and I only had like 50 bucks... Dice on me and he did the thing where he bet on the numbers that he thought id hit before I crapped out and lost a bunch... So the next time I rolled he did the opposite and I I starting hitting and he lost a bunch, so he tried to get on me after he was losing and I crapped out... He grabbed his chips and walked away... Me and the dealer looked at each other and he said he lost like 6thousand bucks and started laughing... Eventhough I only ended up losing a little more than that 50 bucks I haven't gambled real money since... That was like 7 years ago...

The secret to being a good card player isn't knowing the game better than anyone or being able to count cards it's playing the people at the table, if you can figure out the people at the table you'll win almost everytime. That's the best piece of advice I could give ya...

Ive been pretty good on vbucks lately... Lost 874 on Okl not covering on cal state Bakersfield...:L I hate real gambling though, I win small too then fuckin blow it all then lose my "don't touch money" trying to get back what I lost...:L I have a gambling problem, but I have enough sense to stay away lol...
I haven't bet real money on sports in prolly 12 years. Cuz it was a problem.

I'll play poker with friends, but not for more than 10 dollar buy ins. Not worth people getting angry. (Including me.) Havent played anything but slots at a casino in prolly a decade either. Ended on a high note, sorta. Hope I never attempt a comeback.

And I only play slots so I can smoke cigarettes in doors without going to Ohio. Lol

Funny you say that... i don't disagree that reading people is a huge part of the game, but i disagree that it is the biggest part of the game...

cards can really be separated into 3 parts

1. knowing your odds of winning a hand, WHEN to stay in, when to bet, when to hold
2. Knowing how to bet- this is the real key... and this is my biggest weakness...
3. reading people- this talent does enhance the first 2 skills though...

When the boys move out I plan on me and Kirsten getting an RV and driving around and just enjoying being old... Try to win some BBQ tournaments while she writes... That's when I'll use that advice and see how far it takes me... :hope:

when it comes to poker, i hate cash games... I am a risk averse person, i don't want to make every hand my IT hand...

tournaments are the way to go IMO...

Me too, that's why I only play with my wife, and we play for clothing. I'm not above cheating to win, but a guy's gotta win!

Actually, on second thought i would say the most important thing when it comes to cards is patience... It is a slow process, you don't want to get antsy and start playing stupid...

This is my problem... i play well for a while, then i get the I WANNA PLAY THIS HAND NO MATTER WHAT bug... and just go in way too much that i just keep on going even though i know i will lose and i know i can't get the opponent to fold...

I completely agree with #2 but if you know how to play you should know how to bet. Watch Daniel Negreanu and/or Phil Ivey, they are two of the best I've ever seen.

I do not agree with #1, knowing your odds has a lot to do with reading your opponent(s) You can never truly know your odds because unless you can read your opponent(s) you don't really know how they play or how they bet or what they bet on. When to stay in or bet or check all depends on your abilty to read your opponent(s) unless your running pocket aces all day.

You actually listed them in the exact wrong order, if you can read your players and know when to show strength or when to slow play you can win with a 2-7 off suit.

i really didn't put in it order, if i did 2 would have been 1... But i do think a simplified knowledge of how good your hand is and knowing whether there are hands showing on the board that have potential to beat your hand is EXTREMELY important...

When you get to the expert level(which i am NOWHERE close), bluffing is just not common... so you do at least have to know when your hand is good enough to play....

I think Kenny Rogers said it best, every hand is a winner and every hand is a loser. Bluffing is less common in cash games that's why most pros prefer cash games. I myself prefer cash games, not that I'm a pro or anything but there is to much luck involved in a tourney and too many people who don't know how to play betting stupidly and on shit cards hoping to suck out on the river.

I love hold 'em but I am also a lover of Omaha.

In the big tournaments, yes of course it is littered with idiots who don't know how to play... I am not talking about that when i am comparing cash games with tournaments... What i hate about cash games, is on my part, i don't like putting in more than 100 dollars at a time... playing vs big stacks when the big stacks are not there because they are better or did better is not fun IMO... Big stacks generally bully you, course thats how you play with a big stack... I don't like to put in the majority of my money just to SEE a hand... Now, i guess this can be prevented if you play limit or pot limit... But IMO if you wanna be the big stack you should earn to be the big stack....

Of course big stacks bully you, that's how you win. When I play in tournaments I tend to start off slow and let some of the shit flush, i'll play hands I should play but I don't do a lot of bluffing and I don't play a lot of hands I would play later.

My point wasn't about the bullying it is about how in cash games if you start with less money than another person, you will automatically start as the smaller stack.... especially at casinos where when you enter you are just entering a current game... so going in already as the small stack, to me is just not fun... you really have to wait for that ONE hand, that just might never come... you can't really just play...

tournaments where everybody starts equally and at the same time, you earn what you get...

Playing amongst friends is fun, but generally it is a tournament where you all buy in for the same amount... and start playing at the same time... Maybe i just have my definitions of the games a little wrong...

Not going to name drop because now i hope nobody drafts him so i can drop Bucky walters... But i was debating between 2 players, i think i chose the wrong player... Either way i think they were close, so it should affect me too much... But basically i blame Nos...
