How can you hate WAR but still like WAR7 and JAWS? That's like saying you hate alcohol but love gin and beer... they come from the same thing ? WAR7 and JAWS solely use WAR in their calculations.

And if you hate WAR, I strongly recommend WAA (some think this is a superior stat)

I explained it... I use it as a stat that shows how good a players best years are compared to the rest of their career... See the thing about stats, is that if you only use one, then you are a retard(not saying you only use one)... So if you use a stat for a specific purpose, you can use other stats too to enhance any analysis... If I see a player with a high WAR7, then I assume they had good best years... Best years IMO, are more important than whole career...

Yeah I'd say there is. And I'd say you're wrong. Mays is the best center fielder of all time. Highest WAR/JAWS/WAR7 and played in a significantly harder era to hit in than Cobb. I agree all three are close, but considering his great defense and dominance in a neutral, and then eventually pitcher's era, I'd say he is better.

You use WAR to tell others their OPINIONS are wrong but then go away from WAR when it comes to your own opinion. This just in, stupid people are stupid.

When did I look solely at WAR? I brought up defense and accounted for differences in era, two things that are very hard to quantify. Sure it's accounted for in WAR, but one has to go beyond the statistic to say which player/players are better.

Isn't "a player's contributions to his team" connote being the best player in his league? Isn't Mike Trout having an OPS north of .950 helping his team, and making him the best player in the league. What I'm saying is, isn't "most helpful to his team" synonymous with "best player in the league"?

And again, I have, and continue to, use a myriad of stats including and not including WAR.

No, Just like Babe Ruth's WAR took a hit when Gehrig played with him, having other high quality players on your team affects a players WAR. That is why Niekro's WAR was way too high in 1977, because he played with a horrible team and his value to that team showed that, despite him having a very down year, and even fangraphs claims that according to WAR it was his 5th best season (4.03 ERA, 3.74 FIP, 1.450 WHIP, 4.52 RA/9)

Right on. wOBA and wRC+ are definitely my personal favorites. WAR has more flaws mostly because I disagree with how it evaluates defense.

Is there a good way to evaluate defense?? That is the one thing I do use WAR for, or dWAR... I just trust it due to how I don't think defense will ever be accurately measured, so might as well use a pretty number...

No it's subjective, which is kind of the point

I had never heard this idea, but after researching it, I don't see any link to support your claim. Could you provide a link? The "replacement" is league average replacement player, not "team specific" replacement player.

For example, using your example, Ruth had a .551 wOBA and 216 wRC+ in 1926 with a 12 WAR. In 1927, Gehrig had a .540 wOBA and a 209 wRC+ Also, in '27, Ruth's wOBA and wRC+ dipped to .545 and 212, yet his WAR increased to 13 WAR.

So could I get that link, because I am genuinely interested

There are plenty of statistics to measure it, but they are rudimentary and very flawed, especially in comparison to hitting and pitching statistics. And things will begin to get even more muddled with the increasing widespread usage of Statcast (not that that's a bad thing by any means. I fucking love Statcast!)

its subjective, but there aren't many stats out there for it... even the stats seem subjective... That's why I take the easy way out for defense...

Serious talks now... I want to trade up... fine, even though I am serious, doesn't mean anyone will take this seriously as I post one of these every round and nobody responds...
