Spacey the Needle
Seattle Mariners Mascot
1979
Spacey the Needle, which was a man that wore a hat resembling the top of the Space Needle while on stilts.
Spacey was plagued with mobility issues due to his stilts; the mascot was retired after only a few games.

Makes a lot of sense why this franchise is cursed

@wazzu31 nailed this one. I said I would be shocked if this happened and today it did. Nice call.

Did they DFA him? Was his injury a smokescreen then? I do hope he accepts the assignment and plays in Tacoma cause that Tacoma lineup is going to be fun to watch.

I just thought it’d be an easy sell to ownership that Tellez isn’t going to be making a lot money so it’s basically like having Haniger but he will actually play.

And strangely, just that move alone makes me optimistic for this season, which is so weird from how non interested I’ve been about opening day.

it was an outright release. there's no way he's going to accept a minor league assignment here and if any team were remotely interested in him the m's would've tried to make some sort of deal to recoup even a tiny fraction of that $15 mill.

Hmm, that’s weird. Unless he retires I’m not sure why he wouldn’t accept an assignment to Tacoma, they actually treated him well unlike some other guys. I doubt any team is going to give him a MLB deal. But who knows.

why would he if he's guaranteed $15 mill and will probably never be on a MLB roster again? even the lowest of the low team isn't going to use up a major league roster spot on him.

If he were going to play for us in the minors, the headline would've been "Haniger accepts voluntary re-assignment to AAA". I'm sure they asked him, though. this business doesn't run on warm fuzzy sentiment, and the guy can barely walk lol.

The Mariners parted with left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz and right-handed pitcher Jesse Hahn on Sunday.
