On paper it shows we have plenty of money until the players of Hutchinson, Joesph and Williams contract extensions are factored into the equation. That can change a lot of how we go after players
Need to also factor in players that wont be back. Most likely Reader and Zeitler

Contracts will be in a way that the biggest cap hit does not happen this year. 52 million at the moment, if we use Nick Bosa contract ad a guide Hutchinson cap hit will be around 20 first year. It is already 11, so it only eats 9 in cap. A post June 1 cut of Reader cancels that out completely.

I think Lions can extend all critical future FA, resign the players they need and still have 35ish million to really fill out the roster if they want. I am unclear what the draft pick cap hold is though.

Bosa now available and Hendrickson wants trade, what say you, Lions board?

There are so many good FAs out there I dont want not squander much draft capital on a trade.

Also Bosa is not the top FA by any stretch. I would still take him at the right price.

Still leaning towards Josh Sweat as the best fit, but he may want the highest bidder.

Sweat, Koonce, Chase Young would all be awesome pick ups if we did not trade for any. If Hendrickson could be had for our second I would still take that in a heart beat.

Barnes has been signed for 3 years 25 million. LB looks to be the one group that Lions D is fine at going into the offseason. May be a special teamer to replace Reeves-Maybin.

He can play SAM in 3 LB sets too. A little pricey but he is a great tackler which we need more of. No Rodrigo either early in the season most likely. Barnes can do a lot of things too. He is not elite at anything (maybe tackling) but average+ at everything. We will still need to add 1 more. JRM might be done in the NFL(already released). He was not the same after coming back from the neck injury.

Looks like lions are bringing back Davenport for 15-17 snaps before he is out for the year.

Smith has been cut. I don't love it. Over priced middle talent is the best Lions have on the line right now. Outside of Hutch of course.

He is down to his last chance and it was only 5 mil for 1 year. He is just a veteran presence that can give us a dozen snaps or so a game. The D-Line will get a major overhaul. Give it some time.

I am also guessing Z Smith wants too much and is not going to be back. If that is the case it also mean we are going to go after a big fish in FA

Looks like Davenport cap hit is only 1.75

Lions got DJ Reed for 3/48. Getting Reed for 4 a year less than Davis got is a big win. This is not unlike a Williams wanting more money and Lions shifting to Montgomery. Awesome get for the Lions!

The guaranteed money is almost the same. I'd have rather kept Davis.

I would not. Lions got the better player with far less injury concerns.
Not sure I would say better. More consistent (especially tackling) and like you said less injury prone. I want tacklers on this defense.

Edges are disappearing quickly. I really don't want to enter the draft with a critical need. Last year we knew we had been going into the year with a lot of injury prone players and it killed the team at the end.

Looks best remaining are all injury risks. Bosa and Lawrence raise the ceiling, but i believe they play out the year as much as I do Davenport does.

If Lions don't trade their second for Hendrickson at this point they are locked into their first being am edge, and we have to hope there is notna run before it gets to them.

a 2nd and the extension he wants is scary. We need to pay hutch this year or next and those 2 will kill our cap, but man talk about a dominant sack machine line!

Salary cap is never a real thing. The 3 extensions for Sewell, St. Brown, and McNeill count for 30 million of the cap total this year. This number goes up, but it all gets reallocated and moved around. Saints start every offseason a hundred million over the salary cap, and still find money to pay the wrong players too much each year.

I am 1,000% okay with kicking the can down the road while the window to win is open. Having Hendrickson now is a bigger win than needing to convert money to bonuses in the future for other players....I say that as it is not my money being spent, but if Ford is happy to spend to win we should be doing it.
