No they didn’t. The huge gap between what he thinks his value is vs what really is his value is what is fucking him over.

Sure they did. Cap smoothing adds 40m in cap room for some teams and makes it possible for a sign and trade and staying below the hard cap

Yep. He played a game of chicken and he’s lost. I’m hoping he pulls some shit and Silver has to step in and slap him around. The only existing punishment is one the Sixers won’t exercise anyway. The punishment for staying away would be that the Sixers retain his rights for another year. They don’t want that. They want him out and his money off their cap.

It doesn’t change the fact that James Harden isn’t worth $40 million a season.

And that is the ONLY reason he opted in in the first place

No teams have cap space except the bad ones….

Players also didn’t fix the hard capped with a sign and trade bad deal they did in a prior cba

There was actually a concerted effort not to for competitive balance. Teams willing to blow past the cap and luxury tax restrictions needed to be put in check.

Harden will fold like a cheap suit when he starts losing money. When he starts faking shit is when it really gets interesting.

Harden could have opted out and done a sign and trade with the Sixers facilitating. The deal would have likely been for about 20-25 million a season though.

He’s easier to trade at 20-25 million than he is at 40 million. Where this is on Morey is in bringing him here in the first place.

In the grand scheme of things, Harden has no room to stand on here. He decided to opt in and now he is saying he refuses to play for the Sixers. Cool. So why did you opt in to play for the Sixers ya dumb fuck? If you don’t want to play for the Sixers then don’t opt in. Easy peasy.

Playing a little devils advocate...this is the loophole that players and their agents have discovered that allows them to change teams if they want to. Sort of the dark side of allowing the current team to offer more than anyone else.

I'm not sure how you close it without restricting player movement or if it even needs closing. I suppose they could say that players can't demand a trade within a the first couple of years or so of their deal...but then to be fair, you'd also have to say the team can't trade them for that same time frame.

Depending on loopholes is a gamble and now he’s lost that gamble.

It's sort of the miniature version of players signing their max extension that asking out after a year.

I still like limiting teams' opportunity to #1, top 3, top 5 picks. Once you get the #1, you can't get top 5 for X years or #1 again for longer and build on that premise. Maybe a top 5 bumps you to the end of the lottery for a few years, etc.

You could still get tanking on a single year basis, but the value in repeating the tank is minimized.

I really don’t like that.

Not all #1s are built the same.
