If the Suns keep him, that basically puts them with re-signing last year's depth players (most of which were already vet min guys) or new vet min guys to fill out the roster. With Durant, Beal, Booker, Ayton, Payne, Goodwin, Wainright and Todd, they are already at $175M plus a $4.4M cap hold for roster spots 9-12. Their options are bring back their own free agents and go even further over the tax apron or sign vet min contracts. By exceeding that second tax apron at $179.5M, they lose any exceptions (TPMLE, Bi-Annual).
I am aware.

Vogel has to be thinking he's cursed. As a defensive coach, at the last two jobs he took (Lakers and Suns), both franchises made a huge trade that hurt his squad defensively.

Definitely leaning into his scheme work to fix it

I think Vogel is solidly a top 10 nba coach, maybe higher

But yeah the suns haven’t done him any favors

The players got steamrolled this last cba negotiation and the other loser was teams who…actually try

Vogel won a ring with the Lakers so he shouldnt have any complaints.

And I think he will target defensive players when they sign some guys.

Try meaning spend? There are other ways to build a team without rocketing into the penalties. This is supposed to be a league with all teams on even financial standing, not a battle to see who can best overspend their way to championships. A balanced league with stars spread throughout is best for the league as a whole.

That trade exception will go away as part of the new CBA. The Suns will undoubtedly be above that second tax apron.

Will it?

That would be a little surprising

I haven’t seen anything that says those are gone specifically

They gutted his team two years after that 'ship with the Westbrook trade and then fired him. That was the beginning of the curse it seems.

Teams can only use their exceptions if they can do so under the 2nd tax apron. If the use of that would carry them over, it's gone.

Coaches are hired to be fired....it comes with the job.

Unless you are Pop or Spo.

Teams that go above this $179.5 million threshold become very restricted in terms of their ability to add talent via trade or free agency. Teams who exceed the second tax apron threshold (the super tax) are restricted from using their taxpayer mid-level exception, trade first round picks that are seven years away, and sign certain players on the buyout market.

Super tax teams also will also be restricted for salary matching purposes in trades, as they’ll only be able to take back 110% of their outgoing salary in a trade, while other teams have the advantage of taking back 125% of their outgoing salary. Finally, starting in the 2024 offseason, super tax teams essentially are prevented from aggregating multiple smaller player salaries for a player with a larger salary that makes more money than the aggregated salaries. Essentially, super tax teams are restricted from taking in more salary than they’re sending out.

I saw that about the mid level exception

Not for trade exceptions

Sure, but that trade did him dirty. Had they run it back (or pursued the trades they were working on, like Kuzma/Hield), he may still be with the Lakers as he continued to coach up his defense.

I didn't mean for that to include trade exceptions. Not sure how or if those are affected.

Yeah, the suns have a 5m trade exception

Im curious if they can use it

It’s an exception, but it’s also taking on money

But there’s been no clear confirmation on it

It’s even mentioned in multiple articles though so it might be fair game

Like Monty he is better suited to teaching youngsters....that is his strength.

Why I was surprised Phoenix hired him over some other coaches who were available. We shall see how he does with the Suns.

Pretty sure it is....Windy and Woj mentioned it and they are analysts that are familiar with that.
