No More "Bullpen Failure"
Some explanation from Weaver about his projections:
I ran into a slight problem here. Initially, we had “either Greg Holland or Nick Snyder” as the last man on the roster, depending on 40-man roster spot availability.
Adding Culberson to the bench requires a deduction from the 40-man roster. Woodward said that Sherten Apostel should be at full speed not long after Opening Day, so he’s not an option. He also said the team was reluctant to put José Leclerc on the 60-day IL because they believe he could be ready as early as two weeks before he would be eligible to return and they don’t want to lose that time.
I still think they’ll have to make that move (barring another injury), but it also means that adding Holland would be even trickier. They could add Holland instead of Culberson, but the next available infielder who can play shortstop and is already on the 40-man roster is Yonny Hernández. If they don’t add Holland … there are more options.
So we’re removing Holland from consideration, a move that will almost certainly come back to haunt us. In his place, Snyder gets the eighth position, and Sborz (who perhaps should have leapfrogged Snyder in the first projection) is safe and sound. For the last spot, I’m going with Burke, for two reasons. One, as mentioned above, he looks great this spring. Second, he should be able to give the Rangers another bullpen arm who can go multiple innings, perhaps even as a “piggyback” starter with whoever lands the final spot in the rotation. Then when May 1 comes, one of Burke or Howard (or Alexy and Otto) can move forward as the fifth starter, with the other three back in Round Rock.
