JD has always had a hard on for him since he came out of nowhere and stole game 1 of the playoffs for the rays during the height of our last championship window.

Jeff Wilson sat down with JD for a Q and A session.

It seems like no matter which prospect you put in a Cactus League game, they are all killing it. What's your evaluation been?

We knew we had talent, but the quality of play has been good. It's been encouraging. There's been a lot of strides made on the development side. This winter we couldn't work with the big-league guys. These minor-league guys got a lot of attention. These guys came in game-ready. We were able to spend time with them, we had a number of camps, and the coaching staff did a good job preparing them.

Are they closer to the majors than you guys might have thought?

For the most part, you look around the big-league clubhouse from a standpoint of minor-league free agents, the guys that we signed off-roster are here to truly compete for a spot on the team. We did not necessarily want to sign many minor-league free agents that weren't going to be able to help the club because we need spots for these guys to play. It's a reflection that we think these players are prepared and could help us at some point this year. They have to go out and perform, but I think they're more major league-ready out this year than we've had.

Are you guys done spending?

I think so, yeah. We've had some trade conversations, but nothing's that close or nothing that's at the level of other some of the other acquisitions we made.

So, you’re OK with the starting rotation?

I think there's going to be opportunity for all these guys, especially starting early we may need multi-inning guys in the bullpen and we like the idea of developing some of the young guys in the 'pen. There are opportunities, kind of like Taylor [Hearn] did, to move into the rotation later in the season. I'm intrigued to see Matt Moore. He's been impressive here. He's at a different point than he was a few years back when he was here. We can always use more, you can always upgrade, but we're committed to the group we have right now.

Two things I got from Wilson's interview with JD:

JD seemed to indicate that the minor leaguers got more attention this offseason. I wonder if they will try to give those guys that same amount of attention in the following offseasons based on the success they had doing that this year.

Their faith in their minor leaguers was shown by bringing in less minor league free agents this year. That was a good idea and it is paying off based on how our prospects are performing
