Teaming up with Jimmy Butler is not the same thing. Not even close to the same.

Nobody thinks Jimmy Butler is a better player than Kawhi.

If Kawhi doesn't win with the Clips then goes to Miami then most will think Butler is better than Kawhi. Never being able to win as the leader of a team will change the narrative on Kawhi.

Kawhi was the best player in Toronto, he wasn't their leader. That was Lowry.

Kawhi has never been a leader, it's a big part of why the Clips have had issues.

Kawhi isn't satisfied being just a top 5 player, he wants to be the best. Joining Butler and he won't even be the best player on his team. The narrative for Kawhi is already changing. Toronto was a fringe contender last year without Kawhi. Everyone could see that Lowry and Nurse is what drove that team. With the Spurs he didn't win anything without Duncan, Ginobili, Parker and Pops. He's failing so far with the Clippers and he needed Rondo to lead the team because he was failing to do so. A light is being shined on Kawhi's previous stops because of his recent struggles revealing that he wasn't responsible for as much as his team's success as originally hyped. Going to Miami is only going further push the new developing narrative that is forming for him.

The narrative is changing, but not about how good he is. His inability to be a leader has been exposed, but he's still one of the top 5 players in the game. When he joined the Clippers, the prevailing opinion was that he didn't want to join Lebron because he wanted to lead the Clips against him. Now, everyone knows he can't lead. That's all that has changed.
