Add Olson plus a few other prospects and in a heart beat. Straight up for Chapman I think would be insane.

If Gilbert can take the next step this year, it will push Marco down to a 3 if that’s what matters.
That's actually a really good point I really overlooked and I think there is a compelling argument that he could be the 2nd best pitcher in our rotation in 2022 now that you bring him up.

Gilbert didn't put up stellar numbers in 2021, but he really flashed at times and I hadn't realized that he had only started 10 games above A+ ball before being called up. 9 starts in AA and 1 start in AAA.

A 4.68 ERA isn't going to win a Cy Young, but before being called up, Gilbert had only started 1 game since the pandemic started. Gilbert could really take a big leap in year two. I still do think we should add another pitcher just in case though.

That is fair. Personally I would be comfortable if they went to a three man rotation and having him in it. Just IMO I don’t want him in any elimination game or opening of a series so that is where I came to the number 3. To his credit he has shown he has stretches of a lower tier number ace. Like I was saying me not liking the deal isn’t to shit on Marco.
I don't want to count on it but I could see Gilbert taking a big step forward. @SeattleCoug brought up a good point regarding him.

He only had 27 career starts in the minors with only 10 above high A ball and managed to pitch pretty well in 24 MLB starts.

Had he struggled we'd be currently attributing it to being rushed up, but he handled it really well and I could see him taking a big step forward in 2022. I've always had some weird hatred for the 6 man rotation, but I actually don't think it would be the worst idea in the world to keep everyone a little fresher and would ease some of the workload for Gilbert and allow us some flexibility to get George Kirby and Matt Brash some starts at the back of the rotation.

Kelenic needs a vet like a Nelson Cruz or another guy who got mentored. This is why I wanted him to either break camp last year with them or get called up later in the year. He did need substantial amount of time learning to be a professional. I fully expect him to go full pre Ciara Russell Wilson with his off-season to improve his stance and going the other way. From reports Evan White is dismissing the launch angle crap so hopefully Kelenic follows suits.
Can't really disagree with any of this, although I'm not sure what Nelson Cruz would provide aside from the recipe to his Dominican Milkshakes and how to pass a piss test.

Jokes aside, I completely agree that Kelenic needs someone to get his head right. Dude gets way too frustrated when he's struggling and I think that just makes things worse for him. I'm probably overthinking it, but every time Kelenic struck out he would throw a tantrum, then probably spend the next 3 or so innings thinking about the pitch he struck out on and then go swinging at anything he saw to make up for the strikeout.

I do agree that as we speak, Kelenic has probably been training all day to get better, but I think he needs to work on the mental aspect of things. Even the best in the game don't get a hit 70% of the time and that's something that I feel he needs to learn to deal with without things getting to his head.

Looks like I was right that the Athletics would ask for more than we'd be willing to depart with.

I know that adding Matt Olson would be great for the lineup, but then what do you do with Ty France? He's not really competent defensively at 2B so either Olson or France would have to be a full time DH. In that scenario, what do you do with Kyle Lewis? You can't keep Ty France or Matt Olson out of the lineup and those two would occupy 1B/DH, so Lewis would have to go back into the outfield full time.

It would be a great to add Chapman and Olson, but I just don't see how Olson fits with the current construction of the roster.

Honeyman is a guy I am familiar with through a family member. I know his ceiling and expectations arent super high but I think its cool he is still in the system grinding.

I think with Gilbert he was always going to need an offseason to work on things. He definitely had an up and down rookie year and needs focus on fastball command and trust in his secondary stuff. But there was definitely glimpses that showed I think he can possibly be a top of the rotation guy. Maybe not an Ace but close. I think being able to just overpower everyone in the minors, meant he didnt have to work on fine tuning. His ceiling is definitely higher then Marcos but i don't think its as high as a couple guys behind him (Kirby, Hancock)

Similar to Gilbert, I think just surviving year one and getting to the offseason so he could make adjustments is key.

However with what he showed during September in games that were meaningful. Even a couple big moments (Game tying HR off Ohtani, Go ahead double of Montas) against some good pitching shows that he can be calm and perform in those moments.

Was he a little to emotional at times,? Yes probably, but I will take that over a prospect like Ackley who just constantly looked defeated and showed no emotion.

My question is where does he play? I dont think he's a CF but I also don't trust Lewis' knee there either so I am not sure what the solution is

If they don’t get Bryant then France can move to 3B or DH. He became a damn good 1B so maybe he can do that at his natural position. I know they want DH open for Lewis and Haniger but are you a serious contender when you admit two guys you will have to count on will get injured if you put them in the field. Preferably with the trade I was kicking around had Lewis too. Olson fits in term of he is a great defensive 1B and has the power they lost with Seager.
